Rush of Memory

     I remember...

I remember the cold winds and the       soft snow,
     the icicles and scarfs,
     the winter.

     And I remember you.

Your dark hair dusted with the white snowflakes,
your face red from the harshness of the cold.
     You.

But how could I forget you?

I can't. So I don't try to. I let myself remember your voice, your touch, your scent.
I remember how you stumbled over your words, how you always had a smile, how you always felt alive.

     Even when you were dying.

I also remember the hospital beds, the breathing tubes, the smell of cleaning supplies.
I remember the chemo treatments, the x-rays, the hair loss.

I remember you screaming out in pain when not even the medicine could help you.

I remember you, and how you used to stick with me.

I remember when I couldn't live without you.

     But now I have to.
