Get a grip! This is a job!
Before I let my imagination run wild, I get up to start back to the van but suddenly a movement below the window she was just at catches my eye. At first I think it's a cat or maybe a squirrel, since it was a small disturbance, but upon closer look I think I see a man. Right under the window she was just looking out of! I whistle our call, hoping maybe it's Luke or Steven, but when I get no reply, I suddenly go into overdrive, wondering who it could be and what they want.
I decide to double back to the front of the house and I start down the driveway. I go right up to the front door and knock before I lose my nerve or before the creeper out back decides to make his move. After about two minutes, I hear her call out "Whose there?"
"I'm sorry ma'am, I parked at the river access next to you and I think I've locked my keys in my truck. Can I use your phone?" I have to remember to add an accent. My natural southern accent is too easy to recognize.
"I have a cordless I'll pass you though the mail slot, I don't open the door for strangers."
Smart girl!
"OK, that would be wonderful, thank you!"
A minute later I hear her return and the mail slot opens, offering me a slim cordless house phone. I dial my own cell phone number, knowing if she decided to hit re-dial she would at least see I did attempt to call someone. Luckily I left the phone in the van, otherwise I'm sure she would hear the vibration.
'No answer, it went to voice mail," I call out, kind of leaning down towards the mail slot and passing the phone back through the opening.
"Would you like me to call the Pop-A-Lock people?"
"No ma'am, that's not necessary. I will back-track my jogging path and see if maybe I dropped them. Thanks again, have a nice night."
"You too."
I can't see inside but I hear her breathing, and I know she's looking through the peep hole to see if I leave. Thankful once again for hats, I start back down the drive way and towards the river access. I don't hear or see anything unusual, so whoever is in the yard is hiding.
Time to come out and play!
I make my way back over to the access, all the while keeping up my lost keys jogging ruse. When I get back to the water, all my years of training kicks in and I hop the fence and run straight to the window before the man in the bushes realizes what happened. I grab him in a chokehold and choke him out in less than a minute. I reach into my pocket and grab two large zip ties and hog tie him. I realize how easy it would be to slit his throat and dump him in the river, but I don't want that kind of attention and media around the house this close to our job. I drag him over to the row of bushes along the wall that separates the river access from her property and pull his dollar store mask off.
Alright, time to figure out who you are and what you want.
I slap the mans face until I see his eyelids start moving. Quick as I can, I pull out my tape and cover his mouth so he can't scream. As soon as the tape hits his mouth his eye pop open and he begins to squirm. I can see him accessing the situation and see the moment he realizes he's fucked.
"Who are you and what are you doing?"
He gives me the How can I answer you with my mouth taped look and I respond by putting my gun to his temple. Once again I see him thinking and I can tell he knows how bad this could end if he doesn't cooperate.
I cock my gun to make my point and rip the tape off.
"As I said, who are you and what do you want?"
"Fucile's sent me to make sure this job doesn't get screwed up," he mumbles, still half out and dazed.
"And no one thought to just pick up a phone and ask? What if she would have seen you and increased security? Then you would have blown the job."
"Look man, I'm just doing my job. I make the report back that you are working on the target and you will need to follow up with the family in a few days."
"You tell your boss that if he has a question, pick up a phone. You need to stay the fuck away or next time I will slit your throat and throw you in the river. You should thank God I'm a curious man or you'd be floating right now."
I cut the guys zip ties and hop back over the wall. Since I've had enough excitement for one day, I decide it's time to head home. I get back into the van and as I start to pull away from the river access, I can see she is now upstairs. The man from the bushes making his way off the property, creeping along the wall but on her property side, not the river access side where I came in. He is crouched down low and the only reason I see him is that I know what to look for. Any other passer-by's would think it was the wind or an animal in the bushes. People see what they want to see and in a neighborhood like this, people don't want to think a peeping tom would be hiding on their property.
