If Only

Aron Johnson stared numbly at the stars.

Blank.

He had known this would happen.

When he whispered to his friends, planting seeds of rebellion, he had known this would happen.

When he taught his son that laws are not always right, he had known this would happen.

When he murmured discontentedly to his wife in the privacy of their room, he had known this would happen.

But he had not known it would end like this.

Not known that they would act this quickly.

Not known that they would break down the door to his living room.

Not known that they would seize him in front of his wife. In front of his son.

Not known the fright in his wife's eyes, the wide-eyed horror of his son.

Not known the tearing of his heart as it ripped in half.

No, he had not known.

He had known the consequences, but not the real ones.

The guard nodded.

There was nothing.

No sound, no sight, no touch.

He had not known it would end this quickly.
