Chapter 19 (Part Three)

“What about me?” This didn’t feel like it had anything to do with Justin, and his feelings were correct when Nathan next opened his mouth.

 

"You are Millie's most experienced employee."

 

“I’m her only experienced employee. She hasn’t found out how to get rid of me yet.”

 

"Right, I should elaborate." Nathan said, clearing his throat. "During our wonderful family bonding time, Millie and I were talking about what she'd do with the store when she retired."

 

Nodding to show that he was listening, Varian waited.

 

"She said she would probably give the management position to her most experienced employee."

 

Surprises seemed to be a theme for today, and Varian wasn’t sure how he felt about this one. He’d rather tackle Evan’s unexplained illness than who would get the management position of Millie’s store.

 

“I see.”

 

"Granted we didn't have a long, drawn out discussion about it, but I thought it was something to think about. Management position is one hell of a step up."

 

“I’d say.” Varian agreed.

 

Nathan shrugged after that. "That was the extent of my adventuring today. So what fun did you have?"

 

“Hm. Well, Andre came and helped with chores, and I got to talk to him about his study plot while chopping wood. And when he left, Jecklynn came and talked to me.”

 

All Nathan did was hum at the Jecklynn part, which Varian didn’t expect too much more than that. In fact, he was surprised Nathan really put forth any effort into acknowledging her in a somewhat decent manner.

 

“She apologized. About everything.”

 

Nathan hesitated at that, thinking for a second. "She did, huh?"

 

“She said that she was wrong, in wedging herself in, and that she was sorry she hurt me by hurting you.”

 

"It's amazing what artificial insemination'll do to you." Nathan muttered, then paused and frowned at himself. "Sorry, ignore that. Uh...that's good, that she apologized. Very good."

 

Smiling softly, Varian leaned over and bumped Nathan’s shoulder with his own. “If you’re female perhaps. She said another thing too.”

 

Nathan snorted at the first part, shaking his head a little, but smiling anyway. "What else did she say?"

 

“I asked her why she didn’t just ask me, and she said that she thought she could take what was hers, even if it was never hers to take in the first place.” Varian replied, inhaling. “And that she’s pregnant.”
