Chapter 19 (Part Three)

Varian was rewarded with a shrug from his mate before Nathan spoke. "I don't know. I wasn't told. The only thing he said was that, since he was...from a family that did the whole testing thing, that he could still get sick."

 

“I don’t understand why I didn’t know.” Varian found himself murmuring. “Of all people, I should have been one of the first.”

 

Once more Nathan shrugged. "In all honesty, he hasn't seemed that sick until recently. So it's sort of understandable, I guess."

 

Tightening his jaw, Varian exhaled quietly before he relaxed, jaw loosening. “Is he okay? Do you know that?”

 

Whatever Evan had, however bad it may be was unknown at the moment. As Evan’s mentor, it was Varian’s responsibility to know what was going on, and to offer any aid if he could. Not knowing what it was exactly left him powerless.

 

"I'm not sure. Justin just said he couldn't stay. Last time I was in there he didn't look too great. Kinda shaky, and really pale."

 

Thinning his lips, Varian nodded. “Fever then. He’s not stupid enough to bite himself. He has no mate to help him, and he’s been sick for too long for that to be it.”

 

Nathan gave him a slight nod.

 

“How’s Justin doing with Evan gone?”

 

Snorting a little, Nathan shook his head. "Not too good. Borderline nervous."

 

“He really means a lot to Justin then, if he has such an impact, doesn’t he?” Varian asked, looking at Nathan for confirmation.

 

Nathan looked over and nodded. "Yeah, he does. And of course, Justin's worried about Evan dealing with him and not liking him."

 

Varian couldn’t help the snort, laughing quietly to himself. “Justin’s an idiot. He’s the only one Evan’s ever given the time of day to. From the moment he accepted and returned his advances. I don’t know what it is about Justin, but Evan cares for him. I’ve never seen him care about anybody like that.”

 

"I don't know either." Nathan said, shaking his head a little. "Either way. Oh, and he asked when you'd come to visit him."

 

“Oh really?”

 

"Mhmm. He misses you."

 

Surely he had some kind of incredulous expression now, because Varian found it hard to imagine his face would look like anything else in that moment. “I’m flattered.”

 

Nathan chuckled, then turned back to Varian. "Oh right. Speaking of you."
