Varian felt the broad smile cross his face the same time his heart melted and he nodded, stepping to give Andrea room to come in. “I don’t have work until later. And the field’s planted, so I have some free time.”
"Awesome," she said, walking by him and going to the couch, sitting down before lifting Curran out of the carrier. "Yeah, I know, you hate that thing," she said to him, loudly kissing his cheek and holding him in her lap.
He was itching to see Curran himself, but he wasn’t his kid. He was Andrea’s. Closing the door, Varian made his way back from the foyer into the living room. “Do you want anything? I’m going to get some water.”
"Water's fine, thanks," Andrea said smiling up at him.
“Sure,” he answered going into the kitchen and getting two glasses filled with water before he brought them back out, handing one to Andrea. “Here you are.”
"Thank you very much," she replied, taking it and taking a drink before looking at Varian. "So, how have you been?"
Settling into his spot on the couch, Varian drew up his legs and leaned back into the back of it, thinking over his response. He didn’t want to burden Andrea with anything major, but it wasn’t like he had too many people around to ask him that either.
“I think I’m doing well. Better than I was,” he said, sipping at his own glass. “Though the quiet around here gets to me sometimes.”
"Yeah, I'd imagine so," she commented quietly, looking back at Curran. Varian followed her gaze to the baby too and found himself smiling again.
“He reminds me of Venerra when she was that age.” Varian said softly, watching the baby.
Andrea smiled, leaning forward to rub her nose against Curran's, who gurgled and put his hands in his hair. "He's adorable and noisy. He's gonna end up being one of those kids who never shuts up."
“Still adorable.” Any kid was cute, even if they never did shut up. It was when they got older and became teenagers and didn’t that it got annoying. Like Justin. Or how he used to be, anyway. Still, she seemed really happy to have her son.
Is that how Jecklynn would be with their kid? Would she be just as happy to have it as Andrea was with Curran? And how about the father?
“Can I...ask you something?”
Andrea looked over at Varian, raising an eyebrow. "Yeah, sure. What's up?"
How did he word it? He couldn’t think of a good way to get it across, so he just decided to ask. “As a single mother, would you have rather had the father around? To see his kid? Or do you think it’s better to not have him in the picture at all?”
Andrea paused, looking back at Curran for a minute before she sighed. "Depends. I tried to get him to help me out and be in Curran's life, but he wasn't interested. So why keep a man who doesn't want my child around? I'd rather tell him to go fuck himself and stay away from my son," she said, then glanced at Varian. "On the other hand, some guys actually have an interest in their kids, even if it's not in the mother. So in those cases, I think it would make more sense for the father to be in the picture."
