Nathan looked at Victor and hummed. “And am I surprised? Of course not,” he said, then nodded. “Yeah, I’m glad she helped us.”

Victor only smiled as Nathan continued. “She’s really nice. It’s easy to see where Evan gets it,” he said.

“It has been my experience that all Bowmans are incredibly kind to those in need. Though Kai has a temper, Evan does not.”

“Wouldn’t want to see either of them angry. Kai looks like she’d be terrible. Evan, well. It’s hard to picture him angry.” Nathan shrugged.

“Kai and Evan are tame compared to Ryleigh.” Victor said. “She isn’t afraid to antagonize her spouse or her children.”

Nathan smiled a little. “I’m afraid I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting her.”

“I’m sure Evan will introduce his mother at some point, now that you’ve met Kai. Should you meet her anywhere near a kitchen, she will try and feed you.”

“Well that doesn’t sound like a bad thing.” Nathan commented.

“Certainly not. She and Kai know their way around a kitchen.” Victor replied.

“I can’t cook to save my life. I can make a pretty good sandwich though.”

Victor smiled again as Nathan continued. “I’m serious. I set kitchens on fire. My mom’s a pretty good cook, you’d think I’d learn something from her. But nope.”

“It comes naturally to some, through hard work to others, and to others still not at all. My mother was natural, but my father never learned.”

“Yeah. My mom, her name’s Elle, she cooks under some weird restrictions. I don’t eat meat, and my father doesn’t eat anything but meat, pretty much, so. She had to learn some interesting dishes.”

“Adaption seems to be the foundation of most mothers.”

“Yeah, I guess so.” Nathan said, and was quiet for a second before he spoke again. “How long are you head of the Board for?”

“If Kacey gets his way, until I’m evicted.” Victor answered. “According to Vox’s law, until my death.”

Nathan hummed.

“And after that the Board will crumble.”

Nathan frowned. “Why? Wouldn’t someone else just become the head?”

“Only a Joll can take the head position according to the laws Vox secured. I’ve waived my children from that tax, and Vesper has served more than enough of her time.”

“Oh. That makes sense then.”

“It’s part of the change I want to enact, the fight over leadership.”
