The story of Skyrim is vast and filled with rich lores. But the story of Tamriel is even richer. The lore of Tamriel is just rich as the history of our own World. It is almost impossible to jot down everything that Skyrim, Tamriel, and the game universe have to offer; even summarizing them briefly would take an eternity. I will jot down some major information and will add various youtube and wikia link so you can read more about it if you have not played any Elder Scrolls games before.
Skyrim is located in the continent of Tamriel. Tamriel is one of the continents of the planet Nirn. Nirn has two moons - Masser and Secundo. Nirn and its moons lie in the realm of Mundus. There are many continents in Nirn, but looking at a map is better than reading a mere description, right? The map below is the most recent map of Tamriel, and the recent time-period of Tamriel is the Fourth Era.

There are many planes other than Nirn. The image below is created by the Dwemer (dwarven) race of Tamriel which represents the realm or planes that exist in the game universe and how it is connected to the other planes. I will explain the words below.

Geography and climate:
Skyrim, located in the North of Tamriel, is one of the nine provinces of the Continent of Tamriel. Skyrim's landscape is dominated by snowy mountains and frosty tundra.
On the East of Skyrim is Morrowind, a landscape dusted with volcanic ash blowing from the island of Vvanderfell with its volcano sitting in its center.
To the west is High Rock, land covered with high mountains. Though it hugs around Skyrim, High Rock landscape looks more lively and colorful, in contrast to dull grayscale imagery often seen in Skyrim.
Below High Rock is Hammerfell, a dry province with desert spreading across the entire land.
On the SouthEast lies the lush-green forests of Valenwood, where trees cover every inch of the land. Home to the tree spirits and Y'ffre, Valenwood is the rainforest of Tamriel.
