Rather Late Than Never

Madison was alone in her bathroom, sitting on the edge of the counter watching the time slip by on her phone. Nervously, she glanced around at the grey walls, with the pink accents and the Kappa Delta sign. Then she looked down at her feet, which were stuffed into the fluffy pink slippers that matched her pj's. But her eyes kept wandering back to that timer..

3...2...1...      She almost jumped when the monotonous ringer blared out of the speakers, signaling the end of her five minute wait. Before she could turn around there was a loud knock at the bathroom door.

"Madi! Goodmorning, doesn't it feel great to wake up another day as a Kappa Delta?" It was the squeaky voice of Heather, one of her sorority sisters.

"Never better!" Madison feigned enthusiasm and choked out the words, thankful that Heather couldn't see her face which was usually tan and bronzed, because she most likely looked pale and sickly.

"We are gonna start setting up and decorating the house for the glow party tonight. So, just come on down whenever you're ready!" Finally, she could breath once she heard the small pit-pat of Heather's heavy feet stomping away from the bathroom door.

The breath didn't last long. As she glanced down at the counter to see what would be her ultimate demise, she felt a sharp intake as her breath caught in her throat. The two pink lines that would be stuck in her memory forever...

Harrison's eyes fluttered open, before rolling back in his head again.

"Harrison, dude, get up. We have a class in 15 minutes," Cole, Harrison's best friend, called to him from the bathroom, "you know your grades can't handle another missed class."

The two of them lived in a one bedroom apartment on the edge of campus. Well, really Cole paid the rent while Harrison just lived there for free, but it was an understood situation.

Harrison pulled himself up off of the pull-out couch that he slept on in the living room, nearly running into Cole who was pacing back and forth trying to get ready. Meanwhile, Harrison just pulled on the same jeans he wore yesterday and rinsed his mouth with a bottle of water he found on coffee table.

"Cole, chill out, I'm ready. Let's go." He said with a roll of his eyes and a shake of his head.

All of his life, Harrison had gotten by giving minimal effort to everything, simply because of his good looks. No one ever held him accountable for anything, and he had become accustomed to not having to try at all. His grades throughout high school were A's and B's, but once he got into college it all changed. There were no teachers to pity him or be dazed by his smile and hazel eyes, there were only professors who had 110+ students in just one class that all required the same attention.

He knew he should actually try and apply himself, but he had no motivation to do so. He was perfectly fine with doing mediocre work and receiving mediocre grades.

But all of that was about to change...
