08: First step

Depuis le début

Feeling myself slipping into a dark place and tears racing down my face, I snapped out of it once King tiny hands touched my face.

“What’s wrong mommy?” He asked frowning a bit

“Nothing, mommy is just happy to see you.” I smiled wiping my face with my free hand

“Can I stay with you?” He asked with hope in his eyes

Who am I to say no to that sweet face?

“Of course!!” I smiled putting him down

“YES. Grandma you hear that, I can stay with mommy!” He said jumping in front of his grandmother

“Yes I heard, get your book bag.” She smiled down at him

“Come here let me talk to you.” Mommy said walking past me into the hallway

“King mommy is gonna be in the hallway okay?” I asked him

“Alright.” He said not even looking at me, but focusing on putting all sorts of clothes in his bag

Laughing lightly at him I went into the hall where my mother stood

“What’s wrong with you?” She asked grabbing my hand

“UH-” I started but she cut me off

“And you betta not say nothing.” She said turning her head and closing her eyes

“A lot is just going on. Heaven and I broke up.” I said

“Aw baby I’m sorry to hear that, but honestly you could have done better.” She said making me crack up

“Yeah so I’ve been told.” I mumbled thinking of Cyn

“I think you should focus on you and your son.” She said

“And speaking of him, I think I want him to stay with me.” I said gathering some strength to say that.

When I had King, I was young and wasn’t even finished with high school, so my mother kept him. I finished school and started working until I got back with King’s father….and things were good for a little while He, King and I lived together, but things started to get physical and I didn’t want my baby around that so I brought him back with my mom until things got right, but it took longer than expected. 2 years to be exact. It took me two years to leave him, and after that I got my own place started working on a clothing line, all while I seen King every week, I just needed to be on my feet and in a good place. I guess I never fully got there with the way I treat woman.

“Yeah, I think that’s a good idea.” She nodded her head slowly

“Are you serious?” I asked shocked

“Yeah. You don’t have anyone there to distract you anymore, and you can focus on him and get the real effect of being a mom.” She explained making me nod my head

“Of course.” I nodded quickly

“When are you deciding to make the move?” She asked

“Uh I wanna spend this week with him and maybe go out of town, but next week will probably be best.” I said

“Yeah.” She nodded

“And Erica, I’m proud of you. The first step to changing is growing up.” She said lowly touching my face

“How did you know?” I asked

“Moms always know.” She said before heading back into King room

After getting my baby all packed my mom and Kim chopped it up until I was ready to go home.

“Tell ya grandma that you’ll see her later.” I said to King as I opened the back door for him

“Bye grandma see you later, love you.” He ran up to her hugging her then running back

“Bye grandson, bye Erica. I love you guys.” She waved as she stood in the doorway

“Love you too. Be safe.” I said closing the door

“I should be telling you that. No more breaking hearts.” She joked but if only she knew.

“No promises.” I laughed getting in myself

“Bye Kim, keep my daughter in line.” She yelled still waving

“Woman go in the house already.” I yelled out the window to her laughing

“Mommy can we go get ice cream?” King asked

“Does grandma let you have ice cream?” I asked as Kim started the car pulling off

“No.” He pouted

“Then let’s get you some ice cream.” I smiled at him through the mirror

“YAY!” He cheered

“Thank you Kim.” I said placing my hand on her thigh
