Chapter 6

=John's P.O.V.=

I was less than pleased when Claire and Luke came home with more than just scrap metal. Marie being the big teddy bear she is warmed up to them immediately, but I still have my doubts. While Marie and Claire went to go set up mattresses for the newcomers, me and Luke studied them. It seemed the younger 2 were incapable of doing much, but they enjoyed each others company more than they enjoyed ours so it was best not to bother them. The older boy, on the other hand, was a lot more clever. He took note of his surroundings, he was smart about what he did. It didn't take a scientist to see though that Luke hadn't had warmed up to him very nicely, but time does seem to change the heart.

It was about an hour later when Claire and Marie had finished, so they went to go cook. By now, me and Luke had been spending our time bombarding the older kid with questions, mostly about his past. Turns out the kid had lost both his father and mother to the walkers, and killed them before they could harm him or his younger siblings. They were originally from Los Angeles but had crossed through Ventura and up to Santa Barbara in their journey to go up north. It's good Claire and Luke has stopped them though, because there were more walkers up there than there is down here.

Soon we were all seated around the table, I guess tonight we had the special of canned beef. "So, we never really got to learn all three of your names.." Claire asked, looking up from her plate and across the table to the older boy. "Well, my name is Kyle, I'm 16, and this is Jacob who is 4 and-" "and Rachel!" The little girl cut in, her face beaming with a smile. Kyle looked back down at her, "Yes, and Rachel who is 6." He said, looking back up and flashing a smile at Claire, who smiled back. The rest of the dinner was mostly spent with Claire and Luke depicting what had happened in the parking lot, and how Kyle had saved Claire from the walker. I guess next time I have to remind her to bring more ammo..

Night falls soon and we all get ready for bed. Luke gives Kyle a pair of night clothes to wear, and Marie gave Jacob and Rachel some smaller sizes of night clothes that she dug up. The mattress arrangement was so that Marie and I were in the top left corner, Luke was next to us in the middle, and Jacob and Rachel were next to Luke. Under Luke was Claire, and next to Claire was Kyle. Once we had all gotten to our mattresses, I flipped the switch and all the lights went out, then kissed Marie on the forehead and laid down.

A while ago I noticed that if you listen really hard at night, you'll hear them out there. I already know they're out there, but they're patient beings, and will wait as long, or as hard, till their prey is in the exact, right, spot.
