" To err is human , To forgive is divine "
Once upon a time in the 19 th century in Bibury , England , there was a boy named Gustave. He lived in a small rented house with his parents, his two little brothers and sister. His father George was a farmer and had to pay the renting every month . Although this exhausted him, he loved his family so much that he could do anything to please them. One day Gustave's father was asked to pay the rent , but said he doesn't have enough money. However, the renter informed him he wants his money within 3 days, if the farmer doesn't pay in these 3 days, he'll suffer greatly.
Unfortunately, the three days passed quickly and the renter sent his men to collect the money. The poor farmer begged them to grant him more time, but the cruel men killed him in cold blood. Gustave, the farmer's elder son visited his father's grave everyday day
Making an oath to take vengeance
Few years after , Gustave set fire in the renter's house, and felt very relieved, assuring himself that the renter deserved what happened to him for what he did to his poor father. Yet, as Gustave was leaving , he heard a man calling him and telling him that he had committed a very bad crime. The voiced instisted That humans have no right to punish one another, and that if we don't forgive we'll never forget.
Gustave realized that the man calling him was only a voice inside him . That was the voice of his conscience. Because in reality, it is our conscience which guides us to goodness . If a person doesn't follow his conscience, he'll never be human . conscience and humanity are indeed , two connected things and cannot be separated. They are what make a human what he is . If a human loses one of them, he'll lose the other; as a result , end up losing himself . At that moment , Gustave realized that he did something very bad and decided to help the renter. Hence, he broke into the burning house and saved him. The old man looked into Gustave's eyes and felt very guilty for what he did to the poor farmer, begging him for forgiveness. Gustave accepted the renter's apology immediately
Few years later , the renter fell sick, but before he dying , he left all his proprerty and wealth to Gustave. As Gustave became a very successful man ,he invited his family to live with him. Ultimately, realizing that forgiveness is a virtue, and that if humans don't forgive, they'll live their whole life in a circle of hatred, sorrow and misery
