Andy pulls me into the shop quickly and we stand in the centre, breathing heavily and trying to act like we haven't just ran away from our own classmates. I turn my back to the window of the shop and Andy does the same, glancing at me slyly. "Nice work, partner."
"Thanks for not telling them."
"Telling them what?"
That we're out, I want to say. That we kissed the day I walked out of school. That we told each other how we felt. But that I didn't want to write it down. "Everything."
"You know that I won't tell them anything you tell me, right? Unless you want me to," he says seriously, looking into my eyes.
I think of the hollow walls and his fickle friendship with Cavan. I think of the patient-confidentiality agreement between myself and my counsellor. "Yes, I believe you," I lie. I don't trust anyone at my school, or anyone out of it for that matter.
At the same time, it doesn't feel right. Can you be in a relationship with someone you don't trust?
"Hey, look at me and tell me the truth. Do you trust me?"
No. "Yes."
"Trust is built upon trust. Don't you dare lie to me, Taylor -Jade."
I wince at my full name. Just as I am about to reply, the door to Shake That opens and Cavan enters with Piper. "Oi, you two. Where do you think you're going?" he says, grinning.
I turn to the counter while Andy deals with Cavan and Piper orders a milkshake next to me. "You getting one, Taylor?" she asks.
I shake my head but Andy butts in. "Yeah, I'm buying her one."
"I don't want one," I say.
He ignores me and orders a bubblegum millions shake with whipped cream, which, to be fair, is my favourite flavour. "Here you go. And you are going to drink it all. I don't think I've ever seen you eat anything sweet or sugary. No wonder you're so bitter."
"I resent that!" I say, and he throws his hands up.
"See what I mean? Now, drink up!"
"I'm a vegan."
"Drink up."
"I'm allergic to dairy products."
"Just drink the fucking milkshake already."
