Years passed just like that and I stayed the same, no change for better or worst. Time just stopped. And I waited and waited for something that never came.
I was too shy and still am. I couldn't go out and do the work for myself. I was kind of trapped and I thought the salvation would come knocking down at my door to take me away.
The Salvation name was Gabriel. I don't know why but I named him Gabriel, maybe I liked the name or I don't know. I imagined him a little bit of a tall boy, tanned with dark brown hair. I don't know if his eyes were green or brown. But he did have a green vibe. He was cute. And the scene was supposed to go like this.
I would be cleaning the house because the kids were at school and the parents were at work. The ring bell would sound and I would open the door. He would be there fudging in a nervous way, with a red rose in his hand and a letter and his phone in the other. So as the door was wide open he would say: « Hi John can you give this to her please, I don't have the courage. ». And then he would look up and realize that John wasn't at the door but me. He would turn all red and try to touch his hair. Then I would say «Hi» and blushed. Followed by a «Thank you» as he would give me the presents.
And that's how our love story would start. That was what my dream was consisted of. I would imagine that after that he would gain the courage to ask me out on a date. That we would go on that date and enjoy ourselves and each other so much that we would want to do it again. Many dates would follow those two and I would start to smile more. First, it would be once a week, after the cleaning. Then it would be two days when there was no one home. Time with him would be so much better that I would like to be with him all the time and he would understand. After a couple of months, we would come out to the parents and tell them we were dating. More dates would come but this time nights out, all plus the same old afternoon dates. More months would pass and by then you knew all the story, just waiting for the right moment to save me. You just wouldn't know that I was saved by you the day you rang the bell. The question would be popped. A big marriage would be organized, present of the parents. In one year and half, we would be leaving together for honeymoon and I couldn't be happier. Then it would probably follow the kids and animals, and the house with a white fence. We would have a "Happy Ever After".
But that didn't happen. I stayed here, unhappy, trapped, waiting. Until my hope disappeared. I realized that one of those pointless days. I realized he wasn't coming and that it was only a dream, a pure fragment of fiction. So here am I, working from 8 am to 5 pm, going home to do chores. Even after a couple of years the parents have stayed and kept focused on their work. The kids have grown and some got out of the house already. The little ones I will have to pick up from their afternoon activities. Nothing much changed. Oh! I forgot to mention that we have a dog now. Maybe a part of my dream was true. He is big and- «Knock! Knock!»
There was a knock at the door. I put the dishes on the dish drainer and closed the water. It's probably Mrs. Peen, she cooks all the time and there is always something missing. Yesterday was celery, sometimes she even comes twice a day. No one knows what goes into her head. There's another knock and I open the door.
"Hello... Please excuse me, I am a little late. But I am here now, to catch up on what I should have done years ago. I wasn't ready and I was afraid. I was afraid I would disappoint you and that I would be what you were expecting. Either way, I did it, and I'm here now to redeem myself. So here I am to ask if you want to take me back?" There he was, in flesh. At least I think. His hair was shorter, he had a little bit of a beard, not even a 5'oclock or 3 days. In his hands is a bouquet of so different and beautiful flowers. I'm awestruck. He seems different but he is still the same. "I would like to take you out?"
The alarm goes off and I break off my gaze. "I have to pick up the kids from school." He looks at me and his smile fades a little. "Kids?" "Yes, kids." I take off my apron and get my purse. "Can I come with you?" He asks nervously messing with the flowers. "If you want...Ah...What do you want to do with the flowers?" He looks down at them and at the door as I had locked it already. "They are for you. But I can take them with me until we get back." I got out to the driveway and started walking. "Ok, then. However, we are walking there."
"You are beautiful." The trip to the school passed by silent. A good silence. Sometimes I've asked myself if I could miss something I had never had, and I realized the answer was yes. I did miss him. And I'm happy he's finally here, even if we don't know how our future will go.
The kids are playing on the playground and I go get them as he stays at the entrance. When I come back he's still there, looking at something on his phone. When he sees us, he smiles and gets down to be face to face with the kids. "Hello there! My name is Gabriel, but you can call me Gabe. What's your name?" He gives one of the flowers to the little girl and stands his hand for the boy to shake.
"I'm Anna, and he's-"
"Stop, you can't tell him our names. Poppi said we shouldn't talk with strangers." He says to his sister.
"He is right Anna. You shouldn't talk with strangers. But I am not a stranger. I'm a friend of this beautiful girl here." He looks at me and winks.
"Who are you and what do you want with us and Poppi?!" The little boy asks in a protective way.
"Can I tell you a secret?" They nod and get close to him after looking at me for permission. "I'm in love with Poppi and I want to ask you if I could take her out." Anna nods with the biggest smile ever. But the boy looks at him suspiciously as he gets up. "I'm her Prince Charming that is a little bit late but come to save her."
