High school. It was honestly one of my least favorite parts of my childhood. There were the cliques and the 'popular kids' who ended up working at McDonald's when they got older, the cool theater kids who weren't the most popular but always stuck together, the jocks, the bad asses, and then there was people like me... the unpopular kids. You know, the ones who couldn't walk down a hallway without being tripped or messed with? Yep. That's me. But in the end it doesn't really matter who you were in high school, what matters is what you did with what you learned. Well, that is until you have a high school reunion.
I wasn't going to go at first but my best friend, Grace, practically dragged me. Grace has been with me since middle school, we'd be a perfect couple except there's one small problem... I'm gay. No one but her knows this of course, yes I know it's depressing... a 24 year old closeted man. But you try coming out to your parents that march against gay marriage for their fun weekend activity.
"Come on Wilke! We're gonna be late!" Grace screams from downstairs.
"I'm coming, I'm coming!" I say stumbling down the stairs. She looks at me, putting her hands on her hips.
"You look like you just rolled out of bed."
"That's cause I did." She rolls her eyes, fixes my tie and straightens everything up. It's actually amazing how much better it looked.
"Can we go now?"
She nods, walking out to the car. I follow her, getting in the passenger's seat, pouting. We drew straws earlier to see who'd drive and of course I lost, which means listening to Beyonce the whole way there. I mean Beyonce is queen but there is such thing as too much of her.
When we arrived at my old high school my heart was basically in my throat... all the memories started flooding back into my mind. Grace, of course, was bouncing with joy.
"Isn't this great Wilkie!!!!" She squeals taking a deep breath. "Ah... same old high school!"
"Yep. Still reeks of depression and crushed dreams." Grace punches my arm. "Ow... ok, ok. It's nice to be back... kind of."
"Maybe Jake'll be here." She smirks.
In case you were wondering, Jake was the guy who made me realize I was gay... of course he was way out of my league but I mean he was definitely a 69/10. He wasn't the quarterback of the football team don't worry, I don't fit that stereotype, but he was known as the sweetheart of the class... and he was definitely sweet, even to a nerd like me. When I didn't have a partner in this one English project he stepped up and offered to partner up with me. And I didn't even end up doing all the work, he wouldn't let me.
I sigh dreamily, "Yeah... he's probably married with 2 kids by now..."
"I'm sorry but you're probably right." Grace laughs. I glare at her. "But I mean if he's not... adulthood sure treated you right!" She nudges me again.
"I can't believe I'm saying this but, can we go inside already?"
We walk inside, as we get closer to the gym I can hear music playing. My heart beats faster the closer we get, my anxiety was through the roof.
We walk through the gym doors and there wasn't that much to it. Just a bunch of snacks, music, and a banner that said, "Class of 2012" I look around for anyone I would know... everyone looked so different. Well except for Becky, she still showed as much skin as possible without being naked.
A couple people looked at me, a confused look on their face. As I looked around I started to recognize people. A guy walked up to me.
"Wilkie?" He said, "Is that you?"
I look at him confused, "Yeah?"
He grins, hugging me. I squeak, not expecting that. I didn't even remember this guy and he's hugging me!!
He chuckles. "It's Jake!"
"Oh my god! Jake! I didn't even recognize you!!!" Oh god he got hotter...
He ruffles my hair. "I didn't recognize you either! Wow, puberty sure treated you well." I blush.
"T-thanks." I mumbled. There was this one guy looking at me, I think I remember him... who is it... oh god... Tyler.
