My heart wrenches for a second, "Thank you for your information, I am sorry for your loss." That is the second time today that I had to cancel an appointment because the patient passed away. Death is always sudden when it comes to my job, one never really thinks about someone so young in age passing so soon in life. It is a cruel world, when it comes to not being able to save everyone, sometimes even the hero's can't save the day.
I work as a Super Sidekick, it's a corporation that lets children whom are sick and on their deathbeds see their hero in real life. We as Super Sidekicks make the appointment and are the middleman for families who want their kids to have their dreams fulfilled before they pass. There are cases of children who also just needed a chance of their life time to change how they see the world and how they perceive themselves.
Yet Sadly not every kid makes it to their appointment because they pass to soon for the meeting to happen. I am caught out of a daze after the last call with a slam of papers on my desk, I take my headset off and look up at my boss.
"Ms. Lou-ain I have been calling your name for the past minuet, I will not tolerate daydreaming on the job." The sternness of his voice makes many want to recoil in apprehension, but I just stare at him waiting for him to proceed in scolding me.
"You need to file these reports and see if they are viable enough in qualifications for us to accept, along with taking the time to look over your case file." He commands, tapping the large daunting folder at the top of the pile. I nod my head, he gives me a look as if he is waiting for an verbal response; I don't see the need so I decide to correct him.
"Thank you for your instructions, and prior to this can you please pronounce my last name correctly it's pronounced 'Lane', I'm Alyx Luain." I give him another nod of my head, as I tuck my chopped shop hair behind my ear. He gives me an what I can only describe as a sneer, as he leaves my desk.
"Have a nice evening sir!" I call after him, as he nearly slams his office door shut. That is when the silence on the main office floor ends and the common chatter of our average work day continues. I hear a creak of an office chair and my favorite coworker rolls over, I turn to him with questions in my eyes.
"Finn, Why did you roll your chair down here??" I question him, the bastard just gives me his cheeky grin and replies,
"Because I can!" He runs his fingers through his luscious hair, and winks at me. I nearly always forget he is the Personal Assistant to the Super Sidekicks corporation Founder/Owner. Finn has more power than majority of the company, not to mention being married to the big boss man helps.
"What is it that you need?" I question him as I turn back to my desk, straightening my appearance. I'm always self conscious when it comes to being next to someone so beautiful. His luscious dirty blonde hair and dull grey eyes, fit physic, self confidence and an decent style always makes me feel subpar.
"I was wondering if I could borrow your phone?" He rolls to my desk, and leans on it next to me. Stretching out showing off his long muscular arms to the lady at the desk next to mine, he is such a tease it's kind of crazy how much he is similar to my older sister.
"Is Remmy not answering her phone?" I question him as I sigh and hand over my iPhone. He nimbly unlocks my phone, and instantly pulls up her number. Remmy is my older sister, eldest of the four Luaine children; I also have two older brothers that are total psychos of their own.
"Hey B—, Why..." I proceed to ignore Finn with his call to Remmy, and I look over the file for the details of the patient's request that I was assigned. As I am paging through I recognize the name of the patient, as I realize that this one is going to hit close to home. It is my cousins adopted son, he was put up for adoption by his parents when they realized that he had to have his arms amputated. His parents were selfish and they didn't value him as a child being their fifth child it wasn't a hard decision for them to make to give him up to adoption. It doesn't sit well with me, but I recognize the great decision they made when my cousin adopted him and has been his guardian ever since. She adopted him for she can't have children of her own, and her husband has passed from this world from an unknown caused cardiac arrest, she finds love in this young boy.
