if you're a willow, i'm a willow.
if you're a redwood, i'm a redwood.
if you choose to bury your roots in this very soil, let it be.
i too shall plant myself right here, right now, and intertwine our branches
for eternity.
if you need the sun, i need the sun.
if you need me, i need you.
if you choose to soak the sunlight into your leaves, let it be.
i too shall absorb the light of day right here, right now, and share the sun
for eternity.
if you want a sapling, i want a sapling.
if you want me, i want you.
if you choose to let a seed fall, let it be.
i too shall have a seedling right here, right now, and water it,
ours,
for eternity.
may the children play beneath our canopy in the shade that only we together can provide.
may we cool others in the scorching summertime.
may couples dance beneath our branches.
may the caterpillars nibble our leaves and become butterflies on these branches.
may they fly away to wonderful places.
may they plant their roots where they want with the one they love,
may it be man or woman
and after we're long gone,
may those after us use our bark and wood
for beautiful things.
if you're a willow, i'm a willow.
if you're a redwood, i'm a redwood.
if you're a tree, i'm a tree.
darling, just let it be.
