Wretched, ugly sobs escaped a young boy as he stared at his friend with his hands curled in fists on his tiny chest, the other holding his knee with tears in his hazel eyes. The young boy accidentally tripped his friend, and he felt terrible.

"D-De! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you!" wailed the smaller, the slightly older of the two wiping his own eyes before standing and limping over to his friend.  He wrapped the little boy in a huge hug, unable to bear the boy's pitiful cries.

"It's ok, Quinn. It's not that bad, see!" the elder chirped, sitting down and pointing at his red, slightly scraped knee. "I'll be ok! I just need a bandaid!" he continued, the younger sniffling and rubbing at his eyes before looking at the scrape. "You'll be ok?" the younger repeated, sniffling again. "Yea, I'll be fine," he grinned, the younger throwing himself at him and hugging him tightly.

"We're still friends, right De?"

"Of course, Quinn."

"Forever?"

"Forever.

The two 13 year olds roughhoused on the lawn, laughing and playing as they should be. However, boys will be boys, and trouble came along soon enough.

"Bet you 5 dollars you can't climb that tree and stand on a branch!" Quinn snorted, Darren crossing his arms at the male with a smirk. "Bet you I can!" Quinn grinned, turning and taking off towards the old oak. When he got there, though, his confidence faltered slightly. How in the world was he supposed to get up this stupid thing?

"What, ya scared? Bak-BAGAA!" Darren imitated a chicken, folding his arms with his hands in his armpits and bucking his head forward. "Shut up, De!" Quinn yelled, the older laughing at his pissed face.

Quinn looked back at the tree, ignoring the sinking feeling in his gut and reaching up to grab the lowest branch. He pulled a little, making sure it was sturdy before hauling himself up with it. The boy dug the toes of his shoes into the ridges of the bark, reaching up with his free hand and pulling himself further up with anther branch. When he got high enough to feel satisfied about his work, he climbed onto the thickest branch nearby and slowly stood up. In doing so, he looked at how far he was from the ground. Gulping lightly, he stood up with bent legs and grinned.
"You owe me 5 bucks, De!!" He yelled in victory, laughing loudly as he fist pumped.
Darren panicked, though not from losing the bet. "Quinn, wait-!" it was too late, and the boy lost his footing after the fist pump. Darren rushed forward as his best friend dropped from the tree, a crack echoinh in his ears along with the heavy thud of his body.

Quinn sat up with a hiss, rubbing his head lightly. He grinned up at Darren, standing and thrusting his hand up. "Ta da!" he yelled and panted, though Darren just looked mortified. Blinking in confusion, Quinn slowly lowered his left hand. His own eyes widen in shock and horror. His index finger was twisted in the wrong direction, and he couldn't move it.

"DAD!!"

The two boys sat in the hospital, staring at Quinn's stinted and wrapped finger.

"Quinn, I'm so-"

"Eh, it's fine. I mean, at least we have a story for nosy old Ms. Oliver now, right?" Quinn grinned, Darren returning the look and nodding. "Yeah..."

"You're not mad, are you? I mean.. we're still pals, right?"

"Duh, De. It's just a stupid finger, I have 9 other ones. It's not nothing I'm gonna hate you for."

"K, just checking. Forever, right?"

"Yeah. Forever."
