She swore her heart of ice
No warmer eyes
Could ever thaw.
She saw her pain,
And from it gained
A lock of steel
And a hidden key.
Inside her cage,
She's completely safe
From storms outside
And hours of dark.
What she didn't know,
At least till now,
That only cowards
Feel happy trapped.
And the peace she felt,
Was an illusion,
For within the bars,
A darkness brewed,
Far stronger than
The one outside.
And yet the key
To her hellish haven
Was never meant
For her to use.
And so she hid,
Her twisted fate,
And ate the words
That described the worlds
She saw each night
Behind closed lids.
Unfamiliar with freedom,
Until those dark eyes
Came along.
And with them came
Feelings of weakness
But also strength,
And a strange calm.
She felt like melting
In that warm gaze,
And in those seldom,
Yet warm embraces,
She felt at home,
Truly at peace.
Her skies of grey,
He painted endless,
With never-setting suns
And purple clouds.
And for the first time,
She fell willingly,
Trusting blindly,
That in the end,
Those arms she loved,
Would break her fall.
The key to her cage
Is his to use,
In one of three ways:
Lose it forever,
Give it away,
Or set her free,
From all the pain.
But don't forget,
That with the key,
Comes all her darkness,
All the demons.
All that's left to do is hope,
That the right choice
Will be made.
Hope that she won't end up in deeper,
And That the risk she took in falling
For that dark, warming gaze,
Was not in vain.
