I remember the breeze,
the sun, the clouds-
as if it all happened this morning.
I remember the peace I felt;
I was happy to drown in it.
I didn't know why mom
didn't like you anymore,
or why the women in my family
watched you like eagles
from a bench, ten yards away.
I didn't pay it any mind.
My mind was filled with happiness
and my heart was filled with love.
I thought you'd felt the same
But Mom said that
you don't know what love is.
I don't remember your face.
I tried to look up at you
but your head blocked the sun,
and your face was shadowed
like the moon's during a lunar eclipse.
Perhaps it was meant to be that way,
as one day, my entire memory of you
would be nothing
but a shadow.
