Ted pulled the cords off of his arms and head. He got up and walked over to the bed beside him. Ted tapped Josh on the shoulder. No noise. Ted shook Josh's shoulders, gently, but enough to wake him up. Still no noise. "Crap," Ted whispered out loud but to himself,"The only way that this could be possible is if he switched places with me, but that makes no sense. Why would he do that?" Ted stood there in silence, thinking. Eventually he turned around and reached over to the bed stand to grab his glasses and watch. He stared at Josh, not wanting to leave his friend's seemingly lifeless body unprotected, but Ted knew what he had to do, he had to escape. He put his pair of red converse shoes on and walked out of the room.
Surprisingly, there were no nurses or doctors in the hallway, just a cleaning supplies cart. Still paranoid, Ted reached back and put his hood up in an effort to hide his face. He walked quickly down the hallway. When he reached the end of the hallway, there was a direction sign that told him where to go. "Cafeteria, this way, no. Bathrooms this way, no. Ahah, lobby, left! There must be doors there." Ted turned left into what seemed like a main hallway. There was a janitor mopping the floor, but he hardly seemed to notice Ted. He reached the end of the hallway and pushed open the doors into the lobby. There were two receptionists and the front desk, but otherwise, the place seemed like a ghost town. Ted walked straight to the front doors and pushed them open. The temperature outside was around high forties to low fifties. Being early spring, this was no surprise. Ted turned left and followed the sidewalk out. There was a large post with a sign at the top. It read, Wolfhaven Experimental Center. In small words below it had a sign pointing two different directions. One was labeled Three Hour Parking or Less. The other was labeled Overnight Parking. Below the signs, in tiny words that Ted could barely read, it said No Loitering. Ted continued to walk down the sidewalk for a few blocks. He came across a couple hand-in-hand, and decided to ask them for directions.
"Excuse me, do you know where the town square is?"
"Three blocks down, make a right, continue for four more blocks and make a left."
"Thanks! So sorry!"
Ted half walked, half jogged the rest of the way to the town square. He followed the couple's directions, and they turned out to be valid. Surely in the town square, there would be a police office where he could ask a few questions like where he was, or how he got here. He walked past a building that had a sign that said Betsy's Diner. Below it said We Welcome All! Ted couldn't stand the lovely scents coming from it. Scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, and.........syrup! He walked up the few steps and opened the door. As soon as he opened it, he was hit with a wave of a million scents. He walked in and seated himself. A waiter came straight over to take his order.
"Raspberry tea please, and could I have the four-cheese omelette."
"Sure thing."
"Thanks."
"No problem."
The waiter walked away. Ted sat there, drowning in his thoughts. Why am I here? How did I get here? Where is here? What do I do now? The maybes and what-ifs and hows and whys were endless. The waiter came back and laid the raspberry tea on the cork board coaster. Ted opened the straw, and put it in the drink. He began to sip the sweet liquid. His tastebuds flared under all of the sweetness. In twenty or twenty-five minutes later, his omelette was delivered. He sunk his fork into the marvelous meal and practically shoveled it all into his mouth. He finished the tea, and the waiter came over with a check. "Oh no, I don't have any money!" He reached into his left pocket and found a stray string, a button, and a quarter. "Any chance you accept buttons," Ted asked the waiter with an anxious expression on his face. The waiter glared at him. He checked his right pocket. Ahah! His wallet! He pulled it out and payed the bill. He left a five dollar tip on the table and got up and left. He had some questions to ask.
