You're probably wondering how mathematical wizzes like Arthur Benjamin (or me, maybe) can do math problems in their head. Well, it's time to learn the basics!
Addition
This is REALLY easy. Say you have addition, but you can't use a calculator. Most people think that the questions are easy, but when...
194628 + 371514
...comes up, they'll give up. Let's look at it THIS way:
194628 + 300000 + 71514
This method makes it a lot easier! Just watch out for when you need to carry digits.
194628 + 371514 = 566142
Multiplication
Again, easy. Take this problem, and watch what I do with it.
62 × 7
(60 × 7) + (2 × 7)
420 + 14
434
Separate digits and make multiplication, at most, by 1 thru 10.
But why is there a 60 when you said it's between 1 and 10?
Why are you still here? Anyway, 60 is just 6 × 10. Don't bother breaking it up. It's just 6 but you add a zero to the end of the answer.
You can also do "subtraction" when multiplying by 9, 8, 7, or even 6 if it's too hard. Observe.
28 × 6
(30 × 6) - (2 × 6)
180 - 12
168
Division
This one is dreaded by many. Simpler division problems can range from 30 seconds to even 2 minutes to solve! Luckily, division can be simplified by simplification! It's simply amazing how simple it is!
...Observe.
715 ÷ 5
715 ÷ 5 = 2(715) ÷ 2(5)
1430 ÷ 10
143
You just multiply or divide until you get something that's really easy!
819 ÷ 9
(819 ÷ 3) ÷ (9 ÷ 3)
273 ÷ 3
91
(Bad example, but you get the idea.)
Well, that's most of mental math for you! It's easy to understand, hard to master. If you want to get better, try it on your own! (Online, of course. I'm too lazy to make up questions and solve them.)
If you guys want to see a specific (math) thing get covered, let me know! I'll happily cover it! But otherwise, there's a mini chapter coming soon to theaters near you!

Mathemadness
RandomI like math. When I was a kid, numbers were my version of toy cars. Equations, of action figures. Things I could break down and put back together. I come off as weird. I prefer unique. "Ew, you like math? How nerdy." "Yeah yeah. Now. How much were y...
