Some patterns are weird. Others, however are simplistic. Say;
2, 4, 6, 8... (even numbers, not at all odd)
1, 2, 4, 7, 10, 14, 19... (+1, +2, +3...)
1, 4, 9, 16, 25... (List of squares)
1, 3, 2, 4, 3, 5, 4, 6... (+2, -1, +2...)
Those are simple. They're just the same thing or an increasing pattern. But what if you saw this pattern, and you were asked to guess what the pattern is:
1, 2, 4
You'd probably think this is a little vague. Let me add another number.
1, 2, 4, 6
Choices are dwindling. How about another?
1, 2, 4, 6, 9
And just a few more...
1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 16, 20, 25, 30, 36, 42, 49, 56, 64, 72, 81, 90, 100...
You probably think this has a simple pattern of +1, +2, +2, +3, +3, +4, but there's a bigger depth.
Take every other number in the chain, starting with 1;
1, 4, 9, 16...
...and you'll notice they're all squares.
But what about the other numbers?
That's simple. Take this as a rewritten version of the pattern.
1*1, 1*2, 2*2, 2*3, 3*3, 3*4, 4*4, 4*5...
You'll see it's a pretty neat pattern hidden under something weird.
