I coulda gave up then
but then again I couldn't have
'cause I've traveled all this way for something
She better have traveled all this way, to another universe, for something. Although it was kind of (incredibly) stressful, knowing that she had the information that would give them an edge. At least Gabriel had it now, too.
I take it in but don't look down
Once everyone finished their food, Gabriel snapped his fingers and the dirty dishes disappeared (try saying that ten times fast). Jen hesitantly asked if she could bring her stuff to one of the bedrooms and take a nap. She was pretty tired, and she thought that, for once, she might actually be able to nap.
'Cause I'm on top of the world,
I'm on top of the world,
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I've been waiting to smile,
Been holding it in for a while,
Take you with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child
It was weird, sleeping in a bed that didn't move. Jennifer had bought a hammock on a school trip to Ecuador, and she slept in it every night. She was used to being cocooned a bit by the sides, being able to push herself off the wall and sway gently back and forth as she fell asleep. However, despite the different sleeping arrangements, the different bedroom, and the different universe, it wasn't too hard to nap. She was in sweatpants, after all, and not something less comfy like jeans.
I'm on top of the world.
'Cause I'm on top of the world,
I'm on top of the world,
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I've been waiting to smile,
Been holding it in for a while,
Take you with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child
Jennifer knew she was dreaming. That was a nice surprise, though it did mean she had to fight a bit to stay asleep. The first time she had lucid dreamt (her friend had showed her a special technique for falling asleep that was supposed to help someone have a lucid dream), she'd made her cat show up. She'd told herself that her cat was behind her, and then she turned around, and there her cat was. She woke up right after, since she'd lost focus on keeping herself asleep. But it was an interesting experience, one that she'd only repeated a couple more times since.
And I know it's hard when you're falling down
And it's a long way up when you hit the ground
Get up now, get up, get up now.
Now, Jen made her old room (and it was beginning to hit her that it was her old room, she probably wasn't every going back there) appear. Then she told herself that her cats were there, and when she had blinked once, they were. She sat in her hammock (which was hung over her bed) and gathered all of her cats up around her.
And I know it's hard when you're falling down
And it's a long way up when you hit the ground
Get up now, get up, get up now.
She said all of their names, from oldest to youngest: Buffy, Cyrine, Winston, Spooky. She hugged each of them to her chest in turn, assuring them that she loved them all very much. She said she was sorry, but that she probably wouldn't ever see them again. Jen was beginning to realize that she probably wouldn't ever go home. It wasn't exactly bad, and she wasn't being forced to stay (she didn't think), but it did make her sad to know that she wouldn't see her parents, or her cats, or her friends, ever again. She hoped that they would just forget her, or maybe that Gabriel replaced her. She hated the thought of being replaced, unless it was a synthetic her that Gabriel had created. One that was exactly like her, but that would actually make a difference in the world, do well in school, and wouldn't alter her parents' lives by making it so they'd never had a child. That was probably the best option.
'Cause I'm on top of the world,
I'm on top of the world,
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I've been waiting to smile,
Been holding it in for a while,
Take you with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child
Jennifer could feel her dream slipping away, but she couldn't hold on, and the harder she tried, the faster it slipped.
I'm on top of the world.
Jen woke up crying.
A/N: I'm alive, and I bring a new chapter! I swear to Chuck that it was going to be happy, I swear! But.... then I wrote it, and, well.... anyway. What'd you think of the song lyrics sort of interspersed? I thought I'd give that style a try. Thanks for reading, comments appreciated, etc. I'm always up for screeching about new episodes if anyone ever wants to message me, lol!
