Chapter Two - Quick Gossip

After class, I pulled Mercedes aside towards my locker.

"Dee, what have you gotten me into?" I asked furiously, using the nickname I made especially for her.

"I just made you the second most popular girl in the school," she said proudly. I looked at her incredulously.

"Soon you'll be the most popular, when you win Queen of Hearts, of course. Anyways, on to the important stuff, did you hear what Ashton said to you? He basically said that you're prettier than his girlfriend!" her voice rose due to her excitement. I could feel the blush creeping to my cheeks yet again.

"Yeah, well he probably just said that to be nice," I explained midst ignoring the daggers that Autumn threw at me all through class.

"Besides, him and Autumn are still a couple and you know he says things like that to everyone."

"Whatever!" Dee responded, not letting her good mood drop.

At lunch, Dee and I sat at our usual table until a bunch of girls came flocking over like birds migrating to Florida during the winter. I threw Dee a questioning look but all she said was, "See, look. You're becoming popular already." I sighed.

Soon, our whole table was crowded with girls.

"Hey did you guys hear about what Autumn did? It's all over the school. Everyone but the Seasons know about it. Well, they know but they don't know that the whole school's buzzing about it!" said a redhead named Samantha.

"She cheated on Ashton at Riley's party!"

"Omygawd! I know!" Kyra chimed. "And I heard Ashton's gonna break up with her cuz he knows about what she did!"

"No way! They have been, like, going out since, like, forever!" said Samantha.

Instantly, they became engrossed in their own little conversation. I sighed. If being popular meant listening to other people gossip, then I wasn't so sure I wanted to be popular after all. It was all Dee's idea anyways.

"Hey Ceelee! Maybe Ashton should ask you out! I mean, you guys look absolutely adorable together and I heard he's had a crush on you for some time." Said Scarlett.

"That's so not true! Besides, he hasn't even broken up with Autumn yet and you're talking about him and I dating! Damn, you guys move fast in gossip!" I exclaimed. I glanced over at Ashton and he met my gaze, one eye drooping to a playful wink.

"Well, you know us girls. We have our sources." Commented Mimi, smiling.

Oh, Ashton, you're really not helping my cause!

After school, just as I was getting all my belongings out of my locker, Autumn came up to me.

"So, you're running for Queen of Hearts too? Oh, well, good luck then! You'll need it." She sneered.

"Ya! You know you'll need it since you don't stand a chance against Autumn!"

"Ya! She was Queen of Hearts for three years straight!"

"Okay, okay! That's enough! Don't spoil the game, it's no fun when the competitor has low self- esteem." She directed her attention back towards me. Wow. I didn't even know she knew the word self-esteem.

"Anyways, I just want this to be a fair competition, but please try hard. An easy win will make me look bad. Oh! And don't forget the flyers I told you to hand out! I want everyone to have at least one copy by Wednesday." I sighed as I watched her saunter down the hallways with her followers.
