Chapter 1

I was running in the darkness, letting the moonlight chase my white and gold fur as I sprint through the cluster trees. Tonight is my sixteenth birthday, and also my first shift.

I always knew that I would shift into a wolf, that someday I would join my mind into my pack mates and be one with them. I also knew I would find my mate, my other half, on the same day. When I was a little girl, I would dream of finding my mate. I would create scenes in my head, imagining my true love as a knight in shining armor, coming to sweep me off my feet. Though I’ve always despised being weak, I knew that he would be the one person I could always show my true self to. He would be my rock, my heaven, and my soul.

I darted around another tree, enjoying the way my wolf howled in pleasure. I knew it was getting late, so I turned around to make the race against the sunrise to my home where my mother and father waited.

As I cleared the trees and entered my back yard, I saw my parents standing there with pride shining through their eyes. I shifted to my human form, quickly grabbing my clothes so my parents didn’t have to see more than they had to.

After I finished pulling my shorts on, my mother grabbed me into a breathless hug. “I’m so happy for you, Sirena, I never thought this day would come,” she said tearfully. I smiled at her and said, “come on mom, you’re going to make my late for school, and I need as much time as possible to search out my mate!”

“Find a good one, Siren!” my father replied playfully.

My mother smiled at me once more, “Hurry up and get ready for school, it’s time you find you’re other half.”
