She brushed an unruly curl back from her face, jumping at her own cold hands. Mike always says she has poor circulation, whatever that means. What she does know is that she doesn't mind because it gives her an excuse to "borrow" all his jackets(they're too big, but neither of them care).
Mike Wheeler and Eleven have been dating for about 3 months, and they've pretty much been inseparable since. According to El, he's the sweetest boyfriend she could ask for. Boyfriend. A soft smile dances on her lips and a blush blooms across her face as she remembers how she's changed since he came into her life. Two years ago, she was the timid, fearful, freak-with-a-shaved-head escaped experiment 011 who was wary of anyone else. Now, she's a happier, trusting, perpetually curious El who loves Mike more than she knows how to confess.
Karen smiles at her from the kitchen when she walks into Mike's house.
"He's at Dustin's, but he should be back soon. You can wait in his room, if you want."
"Thank you."
El walks up the stairs, only pausing to say hi to Holly. She pushes open the door to his room and sits down on the bed, chin in her hands. Preparing to wait for a while.

Unbeknownst to El, Mike got home very shortly after she did. Karen, being absorbed in whatever she was cooking, didn't notice. He half-runs(as he usually does, since puberty hit and his legs were about the only thing that grew) to his door-
But stops right outside the door frame.
"-so I don't know why I came over today, I knew you'd be over at someone's house. I guess I feel-" Mike recognized El's voice and the way she paused for a second as she searched for the right word. "Confused. I love you, Mike Wheeler," His next breath caught in his throat. "And I love how much time we can spend doing nothing together, now that you're not in school all day. I just worry sometimes that you'll find a normal girl, who doesn't wake you up at 3:30 in the morning because she had a nightmare, who has pretty, long hair and who's so much smarter than I am. I worry that you'll realize I'm not enough. I-"
At this point Mike couldn't listen anymore. El is his entire life, she's who he waited for so long, she's who he's said 'I love you' in so many different ways:

Is that better?

Promise.

I called you every night!

I can't lose you again.

Do you want to learn together?

Here, let me get it.

Let me know when you get home.

I have a tissue in my pocket.

It's worth it for you.

Mike pushed open the door and walked over to his girlfriend. Sitting beside her, her eyes had widened to the size of dinner plates.
"Mike, I didn't know you were- you weren't supposed to hear that- I'm sorry." El wasn't sure if she should apologize or panic that he had heard what was supposed to be a pretend conversation.

"El, what are you talking about? Don't be sorry. I'm sorry, I've made you think you aren't worth more than the world to me. El," Mike looked her in her eyes, the same eyes that make him melt when he catches her staring at him, the same eyes that hold both the universe and those beyond it.
"I love you. Everything about you. I love it when you wake me up at 3, it lets me know that you trust me. I love your hair so much, I don't understand how you could dislike it. It's soft and curly, and it's yours. And El, I don't think I've met someone smarter than you. You're brilliant, and no one else can take away from that. You don't need to worry about me finding someone else, because you're it for me." She looks up at him, hardly daring to breathe.
"Mike..." El leans up and kisses him, the all too familiar feeling of warmth and safety and there's honestly nowhere else I'd rather be right now.
And love.

Eleven and Mike Wheeler are two teenagers lost in their own star-studded sky. Constellations made of blushes growing on scattered freckles, shooting stars just like the electricity moving through two clasped hands. The boy made of sunshine, brightening the world for the girl made of snowflakes.
Two teenagers always in perfectly in step with the other, leaving trails of shaky fingers, lingering eye contact, cold hands touching warm faces.

Mike and El are still sitting on his bed as the day winds down. She has her head on his shoulder, her soft curls gently resting on his face. He is leaning on her, as well, both of them softly sleeping(because this summer heat is making them near narcoleptic). This is how they prefer to spend their summer days, in each other's company, because nowadays Mike is so busy with school and trying to get into this science-y summer camp(but that's for another day). This is how their days will end.

Mike and El.
El and Mike.
Together.
