Rays of the rising sun cut through the shattered window, revealing small dust particles drifting through the air, and reflected on pieces of glass scattered across the concrete floor. Life outside began to stir, with city birds chirping in the rustling trees, and the distant sound of cars moving about the streets. Within the abandoned warehouse, no life stirred. Only death, seeping out of the shadows. Cold crept over the empty crates, and metal shelves reaching high up to the steal ceiling. All was silent, except the distant, shaky breath of a strange boy. A boy who wasn't afraid of the ominous death clawing at his skin. His emerald eyes scanned the warehouse around him, shaky hand pressed against his bloody side.
The strange boy had crashed through the window, panic in his eyes, and muscles tense. He suffered a few cuts from the glass, but the gash in his side was from something else. His chest rose and fell heavily, as if he had been running from something. His skin was pale, beads of sweat rolling down his face, and dripping off his chin. He seemed to have lost whoever was after him, but now he sat, weak, and dying in the empty warehouse. His eyes scanned his surroundings, held tilted, as if listening for something. His dusty blonde hair fell to one side, stopping just below his ear. Minutes passed, and his shaky breaths began to steady. The panic in his eyes faded to something resembling content. His rosy lips broke into a bright smile, revealing dimples, and perfect white teeth. A light chuckle left his lips, and he shook his head gently, eyes squinted as he laughed almost chaotically.
"He's kind of beautiful."
"He's kind of fifteen, Peri."
"And?"
"You're such a pedophile. In life and death."
"And?"
"You're disgusting. Let's go."
"Oh, but I want to meet our new friend. He's only got a few minutes left. I know you can sense that."
"I am not going to stand around, and watch this poor boy die."
"How do you know he's innocent? He's been stabbed. He could have done something very bad. He could be a naughty, naughty little boy. Maybe I should give him a spanking," Peri whispered, her voice silvery, like the hiss of a snake.
"Let's go. Now, Peri."
"Tsk, you're no fun, Zero."
The boy shifted, looking in the direction of Peri, and Zero, but saw nothing but a pile of wood pallets. He squinted, and rubbed at his ears, which seemed to be deceiving him. He laughed again, and closed his eyes, resting the weight of his head, back against the wood crate.
"I'm going insane," he breathed, wincing as pain shot through his body from the deep wound in his side.
Peri stepped closer, dark brown eyes focused on the boy. She tilted her head, studying the boy with wide, wild eyes. She licked her pale lips, a wicked grin stretching across her porcelain skin.
"He can hear us."
"Peri, what the Hell are you talking about?" Zero sighed, crossing her arms.
"Who's there?" the boy yelped, eyes shooting open, and landing on Zero's.
Zero lost her breath, caught in surprise by the boy's piercing gaze. Peri was right, he was beautiful. He stared right at her, as if he could see her, but Zero knew that was impossible. The boy forced himself to his feet, blood dripping around his fingers, and onto the floor. He took a few steps in Zero's direction, then collapsed to his knees. He let out a blood-churning scream, as blood pooled out of his wound.
"Whoever is here, please help me," the boy whispered, eyes growing too heavy to keep open.
His body felt a million times heavier, every part of him numb. Everything blurred, but he could see the silhouette of two people, and hear their panicked voices.
"Help me," he whispered, before everything went black, and his body fell against the cold concrete.
