The Book of Katherine

Katherine was born from an unknown mother, but had a genetic father who unfortunately wasn't there at birth. Katherine was an only kit and her mother was living as a lone stray until she was found by humans, who took the mother and the kitten to the animal shelter. While being there, the mother was acting very aggressive towards anyone who would encounter her, and would protect Katherine from anything that could harm her. When one of the workers opened her cage to take her to have a vaccination, she leaped out of the opened cage, holding her kit in her mouth, and ran through as many exits as she can see. The mother eventually got lost in the kennels where they kept the dogs. The mother got scared of the barking dogs, sprinted out as fast as she could, while accidentally letting go of her kit. The mother ran outside of the building, but realized that the kit was still left there. When she snuck back, it was too late, for the workers already found the dropped kit and took her to the nursery. The mother cat became extremely angry, then depressed, and walked away. After a few months, the kit was ready to be adopted and was already picked up by a family of humans. The humans took Katherine to their home after getting vaccinations and a light pink collar with an engraved name on the metal part, and had already prepared a place for Katherine to eat and sleep. She had already got used to the place and the humans of the family and had grown fond of them. She had learned many things and had observed everyday actions and objects. Though after a few more months, the father lost his job and the family intermediately became bankrupt. They had to sell most of their belongings and move to a lower-priced house. She was then sold to a different pair of humans, who owned a Bassett hound, and lived in a secluded farmhouse. The farmhouse was weathered down from age and no quality repair, having a creaky and slightly unstable porch, with only three small rooms with only one having lighting. After being in the farm for a month or so, she encountered a feral cat that was to eat a chicken in the pen next to the house. She had never encountered a cat since she got separated by her mother, so since she didn't know how to properly interact with the one this one, she stopped the cat and challenged him to fight. This cat, who named himself Dmitry, did not consider her a threat, and kept going on his way to reach the chickens that Katherine was supposed to guard. With her knowledge in her head, Katherine tried to come up with a plan to trap Dmitri, but with the time she used up, Dmitry already caught a chicken. Dmitry ran away with Katherine at his tail, chasing him up to a tree, with the chicken already dead, and a different cat trying to eat another chicken. Katherine became overwhelmed. Later that day, when the sun had already set, Katherine was inside of the house asleep and the hound was put on guard as a result of Katherine's failure. The cat whom she encountered earlier, brought another cat along, who's name was Sparrowspot, to hunt more animals, because they need to feed their own groups and families of cats which they call "Clans", each with their own territory of land. The two cats, Dmitry and Sparrowspot, found the chickens again and found an open hole in the fence to crawl through. With the hound's sensitive nose, he picked up the smell of the cats and started barking. The hound was chained. The farmers woke up, assuming that a fox or a cat was going to eat the chickens, and took their shotgun to scare it off. The cats saw the humans, which they call twolegs, and hid under the dry dirt. Katherine woke up and the humans unchained the hound, which Katherine named Thedog, to look for the cats. Since the cats were covered in dirt, Thedog could only smell the cats and could not see where they were. Katherine came to where Thedog is and was actually able too see the cats hiding, because she could see better in the dark. The cats told her to stay quiet and Katherine tricked Thedog by leading him away from the cats. Despite this, the cats took two of the chickens and left. Katherine arrived back to where the chickens were, and realized there were fewer. Hunger too her over, and she thought to herself, 'There aren't that many chickens left, it won't matter to eat the rest. She ate two more chickens and left the remaining couple to the humans, then left the next morning to the outside world again. She had been in a feral cat's clan for a day, and returned to the farmhouse the next day, then left after placing a dead mouse on front of the doorway because she felt bad about failing to keep the livestock safe. Katherine then walked out to the lands again and tried to hunt more mice, where she was found by another cat named Hazelstar, who was the leader of a different cat's clan from the one she had been in before. Hazelstar wanted to take in Katherine as one of the apprentices of the clan, and Katherine agreed, for she wanted to serve a purpose in a new place as she used to serve a purpose as a human child's favorite pet in her first house. Katherine was given a new name, Rosepaw, from her tri-colored fur and her blooming personality. She was at first shy, but she quickly became accustomed to the environment and their customs. After being mildly injured on a hunt, she was sent to rest in a den for apprentice cats. Rosepaw(Katherine) found her collar that fell off due to wear and use. She then remembered the humans who have adopted her last, she snuck away to go see them, but when she arrived to the house, the house was empty, and the humans' belongings were packed up in their old, rusted truck, and the humans drove away, without acknowledging Rosepaw. It hit her, the feeling of being broken, from the thing she loves most, family, and the humans that she remembered were her only ones, plus a faded memory of her mother, which she cannot remember well. She headed back to the clan she lived in, knowing that she still has someone to be there for her.
