Oh, how I hate the start of a new grade.
Once I stepped into the classroom, everybody was over-enthusiastic, since the teachers tend to put students of the same grade in different classes every year so that the pupils can "know each other better". Pfft. Some logic. Sure, that may be true, but people shouting their names to one another, the fuss over choosing seats; the noise was simply unbearable. Quietly, I walked over to the seat located at the furthest corner of the room and sat down, pulling a book out of my bag.
During my reading, I used my special talent of blocking out the racket around me to have some peace time. Words tumbled and whirled, creating a barricade between the outside world and me. I heaved a sigh. Maybe relaxing would help me make more friends after my previous ones are in different classes this year.
After what seems like five minutes but was in fact fifteen, the teacher walked in. Desks tops slammed and chairs wee flung back as everyone scrambled back to their seats.
Our new teacher was Miss Maxon, who had a reputation for being the strictest teacher in the school. Just great. Oh, well. I didn't really have to worry, I guess. I was usually the teacher's pet, not that I liked that position.
Behind Miss Maxon trailed a small girl, dressed in a rainbow tie dyed tee and jeans. Her hair was red, like it had caught on fire, and a bronze earring with an embed amethyst dangled from one earlobe. For some reason, I tended to notice the earrings. There was a matching bangle on her left arm, the same side as the earring, only studded with more purple gems. These observations ran through my head in the time the class took to stand up behind their desks.
"Good morning class," Miss Maxon said briskly. She gestured to the girl. "This is your new classmate, Crystal Dawson. Please welcome her."
"Liam!" I looked at Miss Maxon, startled. "You'll be looking after Crystal. Show her around. She will be sitting next to you." She pointed Crystal to the empty seat beside me. Did I mention I'm a loner and enjoy sitting alone? And did I mention that I hate it when I'm assigned to the new kid?
Oh, how I hate the start of a new grade.
