The memories are fading, from the last I've seen you.
How long has it been? It feels like I've lost count. But it's only been a few weeks. Or maybe a month. A year perhaps?
We were alone together, watching nature run her course. It wasn't too hot, it wasn't too cold. The wind carried your hair the same, no matter the length. The locks I remember, but the colour has faded with the time.
Often, I wonder where you've gone, how you're doing, if you're well. I've been doing alright. Things are gradually going my way- finally. I've gotten my bearings, learnt how to live. But life hasn't been quite the same since you disappeared.
The connection we have is ingrained in me, and I forget you aren't next to me. I'd turn to speak, but only the empty space will hear my voice. Things just aren't the same. I can forget your presence, but I don't think I'll ever forget your absence.
Today, a letter got delivered to my doorstep. Words told me one story, but there is a deeper meaning. At least, that's what I felt. The letter holds words that I half expected to receive. It was a matter of time.
I begin to write this very passage, and pack the little I felt I need. Following the letter, I reach the location. The location that deepened our bond, that strengthened and strained it. The same wooden bridge connected the small stream under. It is small, but powerful. You personally braved the strength of the stream.
I look up, to the bridge, and sit on the ledge, with my sack.
The last words of my passage are already planned, but it changes right here.
Footsteps build up behind me. The sound calms my heart, wells my eyes.
Turning around, I finally see you again.
You hold out open arms, inviting me with the bond that has gone cold. It relights, after millennia.
Where have you been?
I took some time to think. And I've made my decision.
Down?
Down.
Down we go, together.
At last.
