Betty's P.O.V.
Today, we are getting a new student. New students are huge here in Riverdale. I mean, in Riverdale, everyone knows everyone, so when a new student comes to town? Everyone will be super curious about him. Someone will try and talk to him, and next thing you know, he's part of us. Just our normal crowd.
"Betty!" my mother calls from downstairs. I grab my bag and laptop and run downstairs.
"Hi, mom," I greet.
"Hey, sweetie," she replies, setting a glass of orange juice on the table. I set my bag down next to my chair, and tap my fingers on the wooden table.
"Where's dad?" I ask.
"Dealing with some certain issues," my mother replies. I nod, knowing what that means. Polly got into a fight again.
"Is she... is Polly... is she ever going to come back?" I ask, tentatively.
"Honestly, I could care less at this point," my mother says, opening the fridge. "She abandoned us! I pity your father for still having to deal with her erratic behavior." I roll my eyes. I take a sip of my orange juice.
"I have to get to school," I say, not wanting her to complain any longer about Polly. My mother turns and smiles.
"Okay, sweetheart. Have a great day!" she says brightly. I smile, but the minute I walk out that door, it melts off my face. As much as I disapprove of what Polly is doing, she's still my sister. My mother is acting like Polly isn't even her daughter, which is just plain stupid, in my opinion. Although, I can't defend Polly either, not after the big fight we had.
I start walking towards the school. I wonder who this new student will be.

"B!" my best friend Veronica calls. I turn around with a smile.
"What's up, V?" I say, putting emphasis on the letter "V."
"Did you hear? A new student," she says. I nod.
"I know. People have been tweeting about it all morning," I say. "Although, it was mainly started by "cherylbombshell" when she tweeted about this new kid "invading us." Veronica rolls her eyes.
"Honestly, I don't know how much of Cheryl I can take," I say, shutting my locker and heading to class.
"I wonder what the new student will be like," Veronica wonders.
"Yeah, me too," I say, although I'm not wondering about it at all.
"Maybe, he'll have black hair? No, maybe brown? Maybe he'll have that lonely type of physique."
"Maybe. Let's get to class and find out who this mystery student is." Veronica grins. We link arms and head off to class.

It's about twenty-five minutes into first period and no sign of the new student. I can tell the other kids in the class are thinking about it too. They keep looking back at an empty seat in the back, wondering what happened.
"People!" Professor Maury says. "Symbolism in Lord of the Flies. An example? Anyone?" I look around at the class, waiting for someone else to put their hand up, but no one does. They just stare at the walls, the windows, the ceilings, or the empty desk in the back. I turn my head back to the class and raise my hand.
