On Yamuna's bank was Vrindavan
A little hamlet so blessed,
For all of Krishna's fun and frolic
It was Vrindavan which witnessedThe Lord of Vaikunta himself, here,
Lived and used to cattle-herd
All would freeze in ecstasy, when
Strains of Krishna's flute were heardAlas! Once, tragedy befell Yamuna
With poison, she bled,
Dead fish lined her fair banks,
Away all cattle fled!Cattle or men who ventured close
Either died or disappeared
Fear struck the herders' hearts,
For their lives they feared!Tragedy became more frequent
People lost their loved ones dear,
Until news reached Nanda,their chief
And his son,Krishna's earThis news had Krishna enraged,
Soon,his suspicions got confirmed
These were a vile serpent's doings,
Somehow, into Yamuna it had squirmed! It was a great, black, beast
With poison vile, many a head,
Named Kalia, it was a vicious beast
Those who neared it were dead!Krishna set out to slay Kalia
He'd protect his devotees at any cost
Thought Krishna," once I've dealt with him, Kalia's tyranny would be lost!"
