UNCERTAIN FUTURE
Valerie Jean Routhieaux
CHAPTER 1
Marriage Proposal
Maggie Baker stood at the light with dozens of other people on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 47th Street in New York City, waiting to cross when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Frightened, she turned to see who had intentionally touched her in that crowd, only to come face to face with a handsome stranger. Dark windblown hair, high forehead, golden eyes that seemed to look right through her, dark eyebrows, straight nose, mustache, and scant beard. He easily towered over her five feet, five inches, as her head came to his chin. He was physically fit, trim, denoting an athletic body under his business casual attire.
Before she could open her mouth, he said, "There you are, darling. I thought you were going to meet me. Did you bring your car, or take the bus today? You know we have a dinner party later. We were going to talk about it over lunch."
A squeeze on her shoulder, told her to play along, "I took the bus. No, I haven't forgotten. I was just shopping before I met you."
"Where are you headed?" The rich timber of his voice could melt butter. Maggie wondered what he wanted with her, but since he hadn't threatened her, yet, she decided she wasn't in any immediate danger.
"I was going to Central Park. You know I like to spend my lunch hour there."
"I'm sorry, I forgot. I've had a lot on my mind."
"You look like you do. If it's the party, you don't need to worry. I have everything taken care of."
"I knew you would."
They walked toward Central Park, as though they were two lovers, as his fingers intertwined hers.
When they reached the park, she led the way to the pond where ducks swam, and headed for the many park benches lining the walkway. He sat beside her and turned to face her, an earnest look on his face.
"I'm sorry for accosting you back there, but I'm in need. I've had someone tailing me all morning, no, don't worry, I'm not in any danger. Neither are you."
"Who are you?"
"My name is Nathan Aldridge, and you are?"
"Maggie Baker."
