"I did want to get her back, but not in this way. I can't trust you. I don't want to. " Breaking away from the eye contact, he looked towards the only window in the room.
Hearing that, was like a gun shot all over again, only this time, it was her heart that ached.
"You have to trust me. You have to fulfil your promise. You told me you'd protect me ", her eyes, brown filled with tears, her voice cracked at the end, as did her heart. Again, the weak Peggy was controlling her. Emotions were never her weakness, but Steve was.
"hey, hey ", he said noticing those tears. He wasn't able to believe his eyes, and he could not let Peggy cry. Once, he'd left her; now, he couldn't .
"I don't know, I'm just-", struggling with my emotions. The words were left unsaid, but Peggy understood. She just wanted him to admit that .
They would realise the importance of those unsaid words later. A few weeks later, they would realise that they should've said what they wanted, when they had the chance.
"Please, don't cry", He said that in a different tone, the tone being lesser of Captain America, and more of Steve Rogers.
The one who cared for everyone, the one who never wanted to hurt her, the one who felt the guilt and concern for her more than he felt anything, these days .
"You just know that", she wiped her tears and giving a mischievous grin, she continued " You are Steve Rogers, captain America", she said in dramatic voice, trying to imitate him, " And you always loved Peggy ".
"Imitation is not really your thing ", he chuckled at her weird tone.
"You have to leave now, Captain, she needs rest. " A voice from behind, interrupted them. He turned around and saw the nurse that had been appointed for Peggy for the few weeks.
"just a minute ", he was staring at Peggy . Again. She was confused by his unreadable expression. She wanted him to reply, to say something, to explain what he really felt like. Somehow, he wanted her to do the same.
There were too many things left unsaid between them, too many emotions misunderstood.
He had a strong feeling of déjà vu. The bed and the winds had a strong resemblence to that of the nursing home, and Peggy was on the bed. For a moment, he imagined the old Peggy.
She is Peggy. Those blissful eyes, that vibe of hers, and the feeling he got when she was close. The peace and the bliss. The understanding and the love. Everything that he ever wanted. Everything that was too good to be true.
" I want to believe you, but I want the old Peggy back", seriously?
Was that what he should say while leaving a person, whom someone had just tried to kill? Who just needed someone to be there for her? Mostly, she needed Steve. He knew he should believe her, and try to support her.
"Captain, please", hearing that, he stood up showing his hand to nurse to tell her to wait or stop may be and kissed Peggy's forehead.
In a second, he regretted doing it. Those warm brown eyes of Peggy staring , dilated pupils surrounded by the chocolate orbs that could melt someone's heart, calling him towards her. But he left.
Without a single word, because he could feel himself falling in love with her, all over again . And it was just as strange, and just as beautiful as the first time. Just like Peggy.
"No mistakes, I want the parameter completely secured this time ", he said, appointing some agents there for her protection.
