{Chapter One}

The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was a bright light shining on my face. I quickly shut them again. Questions filled my head; Why was I here? Where did Conner go? Is he okay?

'Breathe Anna,' I told myself, 'Everything will be okay...I hope.'

I waited a few extra seconds, then I opened my eyes again. Wincing against the light, I turned my head to the side and noticed a door. I tried sitting up and noticed I was strapped to a bed.

'What the hell?' I thought.

This wasn't turning into a good day.

~Three Months Earlier~

The wind swirled my hair around as I stepped out of my car. I had just spent 2 hours driving to my new apartment, in my new town. It was great that I had gotten accepted to the elite Beech Hill School, but it sucks that I don't know anyone here except for the guidance counselor. The day I found out I had been accepted was great, my 17th birthday. My dad had wrapped the letter and put it in a giant box. I didn't expect a thing and when I found it I was so surprised. This is what it said:

"Dear Ms. Bell,

We are delighted to inform you that you have been accepted to Beech Hill. Your road to success starts with us. Term begins on Tuesday, September 5th. You should fill out the attached form and send it out within one week of receiving this letter. Course registration should be completed by August 1st. We have apartment units available for rent off of campus. Guidelines for a successful year at Beech Hill can be found on page two. Thank you for your time, we hope to see you soon.

That letter had changed my life forever. Now I was off pursuing my dreams of a higher education. I walked up my apartment steps slowly, carrying some of my stuff. My dad had come with me here last week to help get everything set up, so I only have a few things with me today. I unlocked the door and set my bag on the floor of my living room. It was getting cloudy out so the room was half-hidden in shadows. I flicked on the light-switch up and went into the kitchen. I didn't have much food yet, but I did have some bottled water. I grabbed a water then went back into the living, picked up my bag of stuff, and headed into my bedroom. It took me about 10 minutes to unpack the clothes and hygiene necessities in the bag. I checked my cell phone for messages. I had one missed call from my dad. I dialed his number it would be better call him before going grocery shopping.

"Hello?" Dad said,

"Hey, Dad. You called?" I replied.

"Oh yeah, I just wanted to see if you had gotten to your apartment safe and sound. It's lonely here without you around, kid-o." I could almost picture him saying that with a small smile on his face.

"Yep I did. I got here about 20 minutes ago and I'm probably gonna go grocery shopping soon. And I know I miss you, Dad."

"Miss ya too sweetie."

"Well I better get going. I'm starving to death," I said.

"Okay, kid," he said laughing, "Go buy some food. I'll talk to you later. Love ya sweetie."

"Love you too. Bye," I said hanging up.

Phew, that's over with. I don't mind talking with my dad, it's just he's a little over-protective and doesn't like the idea that I chose not to have a roommate. Overall though, he's a great dad.

I collapsed on my couch a few hours later. Grocery shopping had been horrible. I got lost on the way, then I dropped eggs all over the floor of the store. It was so embarrassing. Then, I had cooked up macaroni and cheese, not wanting to make anything fancy for lunch and ended up almost burning my apartment down. So to say so far, my day was not going well. I was thinking about going for a walk to try and familiarize myself with the town, but I really didn't want to get lost again. I was just about to get up when I heard a knock on the door.

'Oh great... I wonder who that is.' I thought sourly.

I stood up and walked to the door opening it warily. A girl around my age was standing in front of me now. Her blonde hair was swept to one side of her face. In all honesty she looked like a prep.

"Hi! You must be Anna Bell! I just love your name, it sounds like it's only one name; so unique!" she gushed.

"Uh, hi. Yeah my name does uh confuse people I guess," I said slightly startled.

"I bet! Oh I'm forgetting my manners. I'm Penelope Kyles. I live next door and I wanted to introduce myself," she said promptly reaching out and grabbing hold of my hand. She shook it and smiled

"Um, it's nice to meet you?" I said. It sounded more like a question then a statement.

"Oh yes!" Penelope exclaimed, "I just love your eyes. They are so pretty! Blue is the best eye color in my opinion."

"Thanks," I stated. She was starting to get on my nerves.

"Also your hair is amazing. I wouldn't ever look good in dyed black hair."

"It's not dyed, this is my natural hair color," I said with some of my annoyance showing.

Penelope finally started to see that I was not in a good mood and said, "Well I better get going, if you need anything I'm right next door!"

She turned and walked over to her apartment. I went back inside and laid down on the couch again. Life here just couldn't get any worse.
