7 YEARS
"Lucy!" Lucy looked up from her book and towards her bedroom door where her mother stood panting. The young girl held the book close to her chest,
"Mommy? What's wrong?" Layla ran forward and held Lucy to her chest, crying into her golden hair,
"I love you so much Little Star. Don't ever forget that..." Tears welled up in Lucy's eyes as she dropped the book, wrapping her arms around her mother,
"I love you too mommy." Layla pushed her daughter away and smiled warmly at her,
"Lucy dear, I need you to go and hide under your bed. Bad men are coming and I need you to be safe." Lucy sniffed and nodded,
"Ok. But what about you? Are you going to be ok?" Layla hesitated before nodding,
"It'll all be ok Lucy. Now quickly, hide under your bed." Lucy nodded and grabbed her book, pushing it under her bed and crawling underneath the low mattress. It took a few minutes before her bedroom door crashed open, Lucy put a small hand across her mouth so she wouldn't scream for her mother. A silky smooth voice cut through the silence,
"Layla." The said woman stood up from Lucy's bed, no fear entering her voice.
"Hello, old friend. Is there something you need here?" Lucy heard a tsk sound and the man's footsteps closed the distance so that he was standing right in front of Layla,
"Our friendship ended years ago Your Majesty." A mocking tone entered his voice and Layla laughed softly,
"You're right. What was I thinking?" Her laugh stopped abruptly, "What do you want?" The man sighed and laughed, the sound of an angel,
"You know what I want. Where's your daughter?" Lucy's eyes widened,
"Why do you think I would tell you? She's my daughter, I would protect her with my life." The man groaned,
"Come on Layla. END will be horribly disappointed if I fail to bring the girl to him." There was fury in Layla's voice when she responded to the man,
"Natsu will never get his hands on Lucy. He'll turn back into a human if he lays his hands on her, it will be like a drug. He'll always need to be by her, always using her magic to keep him human. It will never work." The man sighed,
"Don't you think I know that? But my brother needs to be human again. END is destroying him, I beg of you Layla, give Lucy to me, Natsu needs this." Layla huffed slightly,
"No. She's going to stay with her father and become a loving queen someday. She will not be bound to a demon." The man growled,
"If you don't give her to me then I'll have no choice but to kill you." Layla gasped,
"Don't do this Zeref. You are being controlled by END, he's making you do these things." The man, Zeref, laughed,
"I don't even care. You deserve to die anyway." Layla's scream was cut short when something thudded against the ground. Tears streamed down Lucy's face when she saw her mother's lifeless eyes staring back at her own lively brown ones. The stump of her head bleeding all over Lucy's white carpet. The man groaned and stepped over the large pool of blood that was spreading by the second.
"What a pain. Natsu's going to be very angry with me..." He sighed and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him. Lucy didn't dare move for fear of the man coming back and taking her away from her home. So she stayed there, under her bed until one of the maids came to her bedroom and screamed. They searched for her for hours before her friend came and found her, his name was Gray Fullbuster. He knew all of her hiding places and was searching every last one of them until he was able to find her, he lifted the cover from under her bed so he could peek inside,
"Princess? Can you come out? It's safe now, I promise." Lucy hesitated before crawling out from her hiding place and hugging Gray close to her,
"My mommy..." Gray shushed her and hugged the princess close to his body,
"It's ok princess. Everything is going to be ok." Hearing Gray say that it was going to be ok, filled Lucy with relief, she sagged against him and cried into his bare chest. He hardly ever wore any clothes. She cried and screamed, but Gray just stood there and let her cry. He knew the pain of losing his parents, he knew exactly how she was feeling. She cried and cried until she thought she ran out of tears to cry. Gray patted her back and smoothed her hair down,
"Do you feel better now Princess?" Lucy nodded and sniffed, blushing when she saw the wet spot on Gray's chest,
"I'm sorry." Gray smiled,
"There's nothing for you to be sorry for Princess. It's been a hard day for you and I think you should get some rest. You look tired." Lucy nodded her head and turned to her bed, her mother's blood was splattered against her pink sheets. She retreated back to Gray's embrace and looked away from the bed,
"Can we go somewhere else to sleep, Gray? I don't want to stay in here anymore." Gray nodded and led Lucy out of her bedroom to a large room with fancy couches and a warm fireplace. He sat her down on a couch and sat down next to her. She put her head on his shoulder,
"Can you stay with me when I sleep Gray? I don't want that bad man to come back to the castle and take me away." Gray nodded and let Lucy lay down on the couch,
"Of course Princess. I'll stay here and protect you, I promise. There's nothing that will come between me and keeping you alive." Lucy smiled and a small blush dusted her cheeks,
"Thank you, Gray. You're my bestest friend in the whole wide world." Gray smiled and put his hand on Lucy's head,
"Good." Lucy closed her eyes and fell asleep by the warmth of the fire, and Gray sitting next to her.
