As the day carried on, Max couldn't help but notice David acting strangely. He seemed worried, but like it was buried under his excitement. David's personality almost reminded Max of an energetic puppy, running around, loud and excited, incredibly loyal to those around him, not a fuck to give about anything else. Max huffed, sitting out of yet another activity, watching the campers fumble about and completely screw up everything David instructed them to do, David not caring too much about their failures, and Gwen just sitting back and watching disappointed. Max could feel the unbearable heaviness of his eyes urging him to go to sleep, but he knew that after that incredibly large cup of coffee he had begged David for that morning, there would be no way.

All other campers occupied, David strutted over to Max. "Max, would you like to join in this once? All of the other campers are competing to find the best hiking stick!" He uttered, eyes wide and twinkling with hope. Max, feeling himself uncharacteristically entranced by the man's large green eyes felt the syllable start to slip from his mouth as he stared straight back "S...sur- wait, wait, wait!" He cut himself off, shaking his head. "Ohh fuck no I don't know what the hell kind of trick you're pulling on me but I'm not fuckin' falling for it. Not again" He said to the man, remembering the time where he almost got Max to go into the woods with the rest and identify poisonous plants or some shit. It almost gave him chills. David frowned, "Language. Also, would it really bad. I alllmoosst heard you say sure, Max! It won't be that bad, c'mon!" David said, clearly deciding for Max that he would be participating. Max groaned as the man grabbed his hand and started dragging him towards the others.

"Max is going to be joining us today! Finally." David announced, the last part under his breath. "We'll see about that." Max muttered, David not having released his hand yet. He attempted to pull away and David took that as a sign, letting him go. "Go on, Max. You're already behind everyone else, better catch up with finding the best hiking stick if you wanna win!" Max felt a spark of inspiration. If he was going to be forced into interacting with all these other fucktards, he better show them who's boss. "Alright, David!" He cooed, smiling up at him with a sarcastic grin, then ran off.

David smiled with pride, and then went back and sat next to Gwen. "Gosh, I can't believe I actually got Max to participate for once! All it took was a little good old fashioned authority!" He leaned back. Gwen stared at him, looking almost concerned. "How long are you going to keep this up, David?" She asked, sighing. David looked over at her, wide eyed. He cocked his head. "What do you mean?" "You know exactly what I mean," She said, continuing. "I see the way you look at Max, how you favor him, how you practically swoon over the kid. What the fuck's going on David? I've never seen you act like this." David felt his heart stop breathing. Had it really been that obvious? He couldn't tell Gwen the truth, but he'd feel so bad lying. He clenched his teeth, took a deep breath, and then calmly said, "It's just 'cuz he's a new camper of course!" Hoping that would cover it up but doubting it incredibly. "Yeah? If that's the case how come I didn't see you staring at space kid, holding space kid's hand whenever you got the chance, and how come you didn't sneak out of your cabin every night when space kid first arrived? Honestly David, it's fucking creepy." David went cold. "I-" He shook his head. "I don't know what's wrong with me." He said, sounding deflated. "Ever since Max arrived I just, I haven't felt the same. P-please don't bring it up to anyone else." He told Gwen. Part of him knew what was to blame for this, but he couldn't tell Gwen. Gwen nodded. "I won't, just, try to control yourself, okay? Before it gets out of hand. Especially with Max sleeping in your cabin and all now.."

Max trudged through the woods, kicking rocks and dragging his feet, eyes scanning the surrounding area for sticks wonderful enough to win. He knew he wouldn't have to try too hard, considering all he'd seen from the other campers so far was sub-par work and a bunch of twigs. His eyes locked on a long fallen tree, one of its branches the perfect shape and size for a hiking stick. He smirked, then began running towards it. He hopped up onto the angled log of a tree, and began walking up it, having little to no trouble keeping his balance. The branch was towards the top of the tree, and he was going to stop at nothing to get his hands on it. Finally, he reached the winning stick, gripping it tightly in his hands and attempting to pull it up. No luck. "You stubborn fucking bundle of sticks of a branch..." He murmured angrily, standing up. He stepped out onto the branch, and began jumping up and down on it, the branch wobbling below his feet, he heard it start to crack and attempted to leap to the bigger log, but it crackled even louder and gave way below his feet, his foot scraping at the tree and max falling with the branch. He yelled "FUCK!" as he hit the ground, his leg twisting and sending sharp pangs of pain up his body until it welled into hurting non-stop. He bit his lip, holding back the urge to cry. Why had he been so fucking stupid? He gripped the branch tightly to his chest.

David, who was just praising Nerf for finding such a nice stick, felt his skin go cold and he could hear something that was incredibly out of place. Crying? He knew exactly what it was. "Gwen! Watch the campers! I have to go... do something." He said, running off into the woods. Gwen sighed, taking it that David had just ignored their discussion and everything she had told him. David bolted through the woods, taking strides forward that were probably more alike to leaps than anything. He looked around, and then saw exactly what he had came for. Max, laying on the leaf-covered ground, clutching a large branch, sniffling quietly. David ran over, crouching next to him. "Max!" He exclaimed, putting a hand gently to the boy's cheek. "Are you okay? What happened!" Max sniffled turning to look at David. "D-does it look like I'm fucking okay?" He said, nodding to his leg. David choked a bit at the sight of the twisted leg. Max rolled the stick towards the counselor. "Here, take your fucking stick. I'm busy accepting death." Max turned over again, and David could hear his tiny sniffles and a bit of crying. "Max, let's get you back to camp." David said, a pang of guilt in his chest at the fact that he was the one that made Max do this activity. David picked the boy up with very little protest, Max instinctively pushing his face into David's chest, not giving a damn anymore.
