It was a strangely cold night in Los Angeles, as I rubbed my hands around my body, trying to get a little bit warmer as I waited in front of the large house for someone to open the fricking door for me. Inpatient, I ran my fingers thru my soft curled caramel locks, that were almost freezing. Bitting the right side of my lips gently, I began a fight inside my mind between getting in or not, seeing that the front door was slightly opened.
-Well, Mackenzie, they are waiting for you, you had already knocked, you ranged the door bell and the door is opened. Just go in! -I talked to my self, a little bit of confidence running inside of my body. -Ok, I'm coming in.
I pushed the large fancy black door, getting a view of the huge living room, that was all decorated with white and black furniture, and no wood at all, which gave the room a certain clean and peaceful aspect. I peeked just my head inside first, noticing that the TV was on, playing some child cartoon, but I haven't noticed the boy playing on the floor, right in front of the large flat screen, before I heard his scream:
-M-mo-mmy! Mo-mmy! -a tall, handsome boy screamed as he ran to one of the doors, tears running down his face.
-Hey, wait! -I said, but it was too late, he had already entered one of the doors, but his cries still could be heard by where I was standing.
-Oh Justin, what happened? Why are you crying baby? -I heard a distant woman's voice asking, probably his mom. That boy must be Justin.
-Th-there's a th-thi-thief in o-our l-li-ving ro-room m-mo-mommy! A g-girl m-mo-mmy!
-Jay baby! That must be your new caregiver, I thought I was going crazy when I heard the door! Shh, don't need to cry! -the woman's voice said calmly, giggling a little as it got closer to the living room, I backed up immediately, scared of scaring the poor boy once again.
The door was opened and I saw a petite blue-eyed woman, who smiled warmly when she landed her eyes on me. Behind her, securely holding her hand, a very scared looking Justin, who had his bright red cheeks wet from crying.
-Hello darling! -she said, pulling me into a welcoming hug- You must be Mackenzie! I'm so sorry for what happened, I was blow drying my hair, and could't hear the door bell.
-Oh, I'm the one who have to apologize, I shouldn't had just walked in. -I told her honestly- But I was so cold.
-That's completely fine, honey! Welcome to my house, take a sit please.
I sat in a awkward silence on large white coach, as I noticed Justin looking at me, still glued to his mom, and whimpering a little bit. What a awful start. Congratulations Mackenzie!
-It's okay, baby! -Pattie told her son- She's not a thief, she's just here so that we can talk. She's Dr. Hills' daughter.
He looked at me, and let go of Pattie, wiping his tears and sitting on the carpet, where he was playing with little cars before I arrived.
-I'm so sorry I scared you, Justin! -I said, looking at his wonderful wet eyes. I didn't know how pretty he was.
-D-dr's d-dau-daughter? -he asked, smiling a little bit, making my heart almost burst at the same instant.
-Yeah, honey! Do you like my mom?
-Y-y-yeah sh-e's nice- he said quietly, playing with his toys, our eyes never meeting.
-I almost forgot- Pattie said standing up- I will just put the pasta to boil and I'll be right back so we can talk, alright?
I nodded and Justin just kept slamming his cars together, making little crash noises. He was so adorable, but you could easily see that he was autistic. He looked eighteen, but had childish manners and a baby speech. As Pattie left, I decided to make a little conversation with Justin, I really wanted to make him like me because I was here, basically to convince his mom that I could spend the whole day with him. I didn't want him to feel insecure or anything near me. But he was the one who surprised me.
-Y-you h-ave a difi-cult n-name! -he said, looking at me this time, his toys still in his hands.
-Yeah, it's pretty complicated- I giggled at his honest observation- but you can call me Kenzie if you want. Would it be better?
-K-kenzie? -he said, smiling this time, and standing up a little wiggly.
-Yeah, as you're calling me by my nickname, can I call you Jay?
-D-oes K-kenzie li-kes h-hugs? -he asked after he nodded, a little scared still.
-Of course, baby! Come here. -I said, opening my arms only to have him cuddling in my chest. Such a cute boy.
I held his hot small body in my arms, rubbing his back gently and running my fingers thru his blondish locks. He let small content moaning at my moves.
-I was wondering if I could play a little bit with you? -I whispered in his ears, making his eyes light up at the exact moment.
-Ye-ah! -he screamed and jumped off of my lap, pulling my hands and making me sit on the floor with him.
After a while, he had showed me all of his cars and we were playing "Cars Family", as he told me what the game was called. Apparently, that was just a family, but instead of people, it was cars.
-T-he m-mommy h-as t-to tu-ck t-he b-baby i-in the b-ed! -he said, covering one of the cars with the carpet.
I just laughed at him, and continued "playing". He was just leading the game, and I was pretending that I understood how to play it, but actually I was having fun. He was so cute and was always making me laugh.
-Dinner's ready, guys! -we heard Pattie say, and I stood up, Justin immediately grabbing my hand and leading me to the amazingly huge kitchen, after commemorating dinner's time. This kid.
-M-momma! -Justin said, smiling when we got to the kitchen, wrapping his arms around his mom- J-ustin mis-sed yo-u!
-Aw, I missed you too! I see you already like Mackenzie, huh?
-K-kenzie ve-ry n-nice! -he told her, now, hugging me, making Pattie and I, smiled.
-Now, let's eat, baby!
We all sat at the table, and I served me some of Pattie's amazing bolognese pasta. I noticed that Justin can't eat by himself, as Pattie fed him, and that he doesn't eat much.
-So, tell me a little bit about you, honey. -she said, still giving Justin some small spoonfuls of pasta, that he chewed very slowly.
-Well, I'm twenty and I go to med school because I want to be a pediatrician doctor. I'm in love with kids just as my mom. I still live with my parents, because I really enjoy it, and I can't wait to finish university so I can work. When my mom told me about Justin, I was so happy about it, so I really hope you think I'm capable of taking care of your son, because I'm really looking forward to.
-Yeah, you convinced me! I will employ you, Mackenzie- she said making me smile- I think you're really mature and went along so easily with Justin. He's normally a little hard with people at first, but he seemed to like you a lot.
-Thank you so much, Pattie! I'm so exited to take care of your boy!
-I'm the one who need to thank you-she smiled, feeding Justin another spoonful- I was drowning in worries with the nurses list, I couldn't see those people taking care of Justin.
-Y-yay! -Justin clapped with his month full, making we burst into laughing.
As we continued eating, I noticed Justin getting a little upset. Pattie just kept feeding him, and by the look on his face, he couldn't eat anymore. As Pattie tried to give him some more pasta, he let a small cry out, fresh tears forming:
-N-no mo-re! -he cried, pushing his mom's hand away. He hadn't ate even half of his very small portion.
-Do you want to take injection? -Pattie said sternly, pushing the pasta towards his month, but he didn't open- I think you want to take the injection today, huh?
-N-no! -he whimpered, tears falling from his beautiful eyes.
-So eat, you didn't eat even half of it. You don't want to go back to the hospital, do you?
Justin shook his head and opened his month, eating quietly as Pattie continued to talk to me:
-One important thing you need to know about him. He hates eating. I don't know why he's so hard when it comes to food. He can spend three days with no food at all, but you got to make him eat as he gets weak very easily and this proceed into sickness. If he doesn't eat, there's a shot that he got to take, but it's my last option.
I nodded, wondering why this hate for food. Poor thing, it must be hard to hate something and have to do it everyday.
-So, let's go a little bit thru Justin's routine! -she continued- Everyday, he wakes up on his own at 8 am, and I always like to give him a shower before breakfast because he usually has a little fever during the night, so he sweat a little bit. Then, he eats breakfast, and I just let him chose between coloring or playing after that. He can't play outside tho. Then I give him lunch, he takes medicine and I don't know how this will run, because you will have to give him the vitamin injection and then nap time, or he will be grumpy because he gets tired.
I nodded, processing all the information she was giving me, and mentally hoping she wrote all of this for me.
-Justin's body can't fight infections so he tend to get sick very easily. On sick days, he will just stay in bed or he will be glued to you. He can't be barefoot, otherwise he will catch a cold, so socks are the best option. Every time he goes to the restroom or take a shower, his bottom has to be coated with rash cream because his skin is very sensitive. Pacifier just when he is crying or before sleep. He will have tantrums, they happen very often. You can control by calming him, but if he gets out of control, there's a medicine for that.
-Wow, okay! -I said, and she smiled, giving a very upset Justin, his last spoonful.
-I wrote everything on that notebook- she said showing me- But I think he will be easy, he's not that hard. The medication part will be the biggest problem I think, because he throws a big fit.
-I think I can manage! -I said and looked at Justin- You will be a good boy taking your injection, right?
-Y-yes! -he said, smiling for me and continuing- I-I too-k a b-ig inj-jec-jection a-nd g-got sticker-ers be-cause I w-was b-brave! -he told me, walking to my side.
-Oh yeah? So are you a brave boy?
-Y-yeah, v-very brav-ve. I h-have a spider-der m-man boo boo! L-ook! -he said, turning around and lowering his pants and underwear, showing me his white round cheeks, that had a little spider man's spot band-aid there, in a bruised area.
I burst into laughing as Pattie screamed, laughing as well at a giggly Justin:
-Baby, you can't show your bottom to everyone like this! -she said, trying to pull his pants up, but he just started to wiggle it- Oh my God, Justin! What am I going to do with you?
I laughed, very happy with my new job and thinking of how a boy that was crying because he was scared of me was now showing me his bare ass. I loved Justin!
