Chapter Three

I felt as if Sharon knew me. She was kind to me, and she didn't expect me to be anything but myself. Finally, I didn't have to be someone else.

This was like a new beginning for me. Sure, some people disliked me, but I had my own friend who respected me. She also had other friends that were kind to me.

"This is Amber," Sharon said, motioning to a pretty girl. She wasn't only pretty. She was beautiful. Her hair was long and brown with streaks of gold, and she had blue eyes. She wore makeup, but not a lot. She wore enough to accentuate her features, but not too much so that it looked like a mask. I looked closer at her and realized that she was the girl that sat down beside me when I first met Sharon in the cafeteria. It was hard to tell, since her makeup was different.

"Hi," she greeted me. She stood up from her seat to shake my hand. Only then did I realize how small she was. She wasn't short, just petite. And skinny. "We met the other day, didn't we? You're Tamara, right?"

I nodded. "Yeah. It's great to meet you."

Amber looked at my face intently. "You should come over some time. I could do your makeup."

"Oh. Thanks," I replied. I didn't wear makeup, but this girl seemed to be good with it. I could give it a try.

"Tamara, I want you to meet someone else," Sharon told me. "Amber, where's Mira?"

Amber shrugged. "Detention, I guess."

Sharon sighed. "Homework?"

Amber grinned. "You know Mira. She's so smart, but she doesn't do the work."

"Just enough to pass the year," Sharon agreed.

Amber looked over at me. "Mira, our friend, is a bit of a troublemaker. But you'll get used to her."

I nodded as if I understood. I wasn't sure what kind of person Mira was, but from what I'd heard, I didn't want to get too close to a person like her.

"There she is!" Sharon exclaimed. A girl with short dark hair entered the cafeteria, looked around, and walked toward us. "Where've you been?"

"Stupid teacher wanted to tell me how much potential I have. Like that's going to convince me of anything." The girl's voice was loud and clear, as if she wasn't afraid of others hearing her. She looked over at me. "Who are you?"

I lowered my eyes. This girl reminded me of Morgan. I decided that I didn't like her.

"This is Tamara," Sharon told her for me.

I looked up to see Mira sit down beside Amber. Mira stared at me for a while before looking at Sharon. "I just don't get it."

"What?" Sharon asked in a threatening tone of voice.

"Why do you have to help everyone? Can't you just let them deal with their own problems?!" Mira gritted her teeth. "We're like dogs to you, aren't we? You adopt us and train us to be perfect. Well, you're not done with me, Sharon. I'm still not perfect!" And with that, she stood up and walked out of the cafeteria.

I looked over at Sharon, who was shaking her head and picking at her food. "I'm sorry," she told me. "Mira's a little bit..."

I nodded, feeling sorry for Sharon. She just wanted to help people and make friends, I assumed. She was nice, and she didn't deserve any disrespect from Mira or anyone else.

"Mira isn't a bad person, though," Amber told me. "She has... anger issues, I guess you could say. She doesn't really get along with anyone, and she's a bit rude. But..."
