The morning after Sirius wakes up on the couch hoping and praying to Merlin that last night was a dream. He hears Moony in the kitchen as usual so he starts to believe that it was all a dream until he hears Harry stirring in the crib next to him.

He shuffles into the kitchen with a hungry Harry in his arms and places him in the highchair he transfigured one of the dining chairs into.

"Moony, what does a one year old eat for breakfast? I've only ever fed him lunch and dinner." He asks somberly while pouring a cup of coffee.

"Oatmeal with milk, Padfoot." Remus replies while smiling affectionately at Sirius and kissing Harry on his head.

As the two friends go through their morning routine in a daze they slowly realize this is real. Their best friends are gone. Their best friends won't be there to raise their child. When they were named Godfather's they never thought it would be used for anything other than a bargaining tool for keeping him for the weekend or teaching him new tricks.

Then it hits Remus. Lily, his best friend, his one confidant, is gone. She's never coming back. James, his oldest friend, one of the only people that never thought he was "too dangerous" is gone. And Harry, poor, sweet baby Harry is his and Sirius' to raise, without his mum and dad. Then he breaks, he walks into his room as calm as possible in front of his best friend and godson, and collapses on his bed. Casting a silencing charm he screams. He yells, he let's it all out. All the anger at Wormtail. All the sadness at losing his friends. All the heartbreak about Harry never growing up with his wonderful mother and father.

Sirius carries Harry around tight in his arms all day, never setting him down, ignoring the floo calls from friends asking about him. Just carries his godson and tells him about the parents he will never know. About their love story, about pranks they pulled, about their love for him and their strength and bravery.

When Harry starts giggling at the different voices and says "love you" in his little voice Sirius knocks on Remus' door. The man answers the door with bloodshot swollen eyes and takes the boy and holds him close.

"Love you!" Harry yells and hugs his godfather. A smile appears on Remus' face that makes his best friend melt for reasons the man has yet to understand. But for that moment, that one moment there are smiles on their faces and they believe they'll be okay.
