The cool October air brushed through Kevin's messy dark hair as he strode down the cracked sidewalk to school. He hummed silently along to the song playing on his phone. His loose shoelaces hitting each other to the beat as he walked faster around the corner. It was another boring day of school. A long stress filled day. Kevin could hardly wait to hear the insults that would be thrown at him. Maybe today he'd be called "a loner" or maybe a "screw up". Who knows! Kevin shoved his hands deeper into his sweatshirt pockets as his mind drifted off. See he wasn't necessarily popular or social or even outgoing. Kevin was the opposite. He was a weird awkward nerd that had barely any emotions. He only talked to his one friend Benji and Benji wasn't any better socially. Kevin had made it to the school and slowly slid his headphones off his ears and allowed the voices of screaming teens to fill the empty space. As he walked inside he was greeted with glances and smirks from students. He could hear kids yelling with their friends and describing how their weekend was. Kevin ignored it and strolled over to the stairs and went to the second floor in the computer lab. That's where he found Benji working on homework.
"Hey Kevin." Benji mumbled not looking up from his typing.
"How did you know it was me when you didn't even look up?" Kevin said in a smart tone.
"Computer screen reflection. And also you are the only other person who would walk in here on a Monday morning" Benji said still concentrating on typing.
"You make a good argument. What you working on?" Kevin swung off his backpack and sat on the table behind Benji to get a look at the computer.
"Just a english assignment. We had to analyze some poem and the teacher wanted us to type it."
"Why didn't you type it at home? You're always glued to your computer."
"Well Kevin you see I was very busy working on my comic so I was not even near my computer this weekend."
"Ah so you forgot to do your homework?" Kevin smirked.
"Yes. Yes I did." Benji turned back around to work and then printed his paper stuffing it into his backpack. He had loose papers everywhere. There were old homework assignments and small comics and doodles messily drawn and smudged on the backs of some.
"You really need to organize your backpack." Kevin said gazing at the papers.
"No I don't it's fine I know where everything is. Plus I can't throw out any of these papers! Some of them have really good drawings on them!" Benji said clutching his backpack as if it were a child.
"Ok fine. Just don't get upset when you can't find your homework in that mess." Kevin slid off the table picking up his backpack.
"I won't lose anything. Know what time it is?" Benji asked walking out of the computer lab next to his friend.
"7:43 just two more minutes till the bell." Kevin said checking his phone and then putting it back into his pocket.
"Well I'm gonna get going to class. I'll see you after school today. You're house right?" Benji said sounding hurried to rush off to his class but still was eager to hear about the plans between him and Kevin.
"Yep. I'll see you then." And with that the two friends parted ways for the day.
Kevin couldn't take class anymore. The hands of the clock ticked so slowly and he just wanted to be home and hang with Benji. The teacher droned on about how to set up a math equation. Kevin didn't listen. Fifteen minutes left. Ten minutes left. Come on lady we want to leave on time. Five minutes. Three minutes. Two. Bell. The students rushed out as the teacher yelled unimportant information their way. Kevin pushed past the crowd to get outside and meet his friend.
"Hey Kevin!" Benji waved from a table outside. Kevin jogged over greeting his friend and they walked off. "So how was your day?" Just the glare Kevin gave Benji as a response to his question let him know that Kevin had a crappy long day.
"I just want to be home order a pizza and play some online games." Kevin said sighing. "School is actually worse then spending a day in hell." Benji chuckled at that comment.
"That gives me a good idea for a comic. Thanks for the inspiring words Kevin."
"No problem."
Back at Kevin's house the two boys had ordered and pizza and had played video games for a good two hours.
"What else should we do?" Benji asked.
"Oh yeah I gotta show you this!" Kevin jumped up shutting off the PlayStation racing to his room pulling Benji along.
"Pull up a chair." Kevin instructed as he sat down at his desk with his computer. The room was messy with some clothes on the floor and Kevin's bed was unmade but Benji didn't mind and pulled up a chair.
"What's so exciting?" Benji asked with a curious look. "Did you get a new game or something?" Kevin shook his head.
"No even better! You see I found this website and found a way to get onto the deep web. I wanted to try it out with you!"
"W-why would you do that? Like that's cool and all but do you know how much messed up stuff you can find?" Benji said almost scared his normally Chill happy personality being replaced by his scaredy cat act.
"Yeah but I mean come on we won't do anything bad I promise." Kevin started typing away and clicking on strange links. A new tab had popped up on the computer. The search engine was strange and required a password when you wanted to look something up.
"Uh so what to do we look up?" Benji said looking at the screen. Kevin held up a finger as if to tell Benji to be patient and chuckled. He knew this idea would make Benji freak!
"Kevin what are you? Oh my god no! This is illegal Kevin!!" Benji gasped as Kevin pulled up a website with drugs on it.
"Dude come on calm down I'm not gonna buy anything." Kevin scrolled down. "Look at all these idiots. I wonder if any kids from school get their stashes from sites like these." Kevin continued to scroll.
"Kev we should stop this isn't right." Benji was terrified. What if someone walked in and saw this?
"Loosen up buddy. Oh hey look this person seems to be in our area." Kevin clicked on a seller named Chimi. "Seems like they get their stuff from someone else and then sell here for some extra cash." Kevin said scanning the accounts description for info on as to why someone would sell drugs.
"M-maybe we can report them or something? You know to the police?" Benji stuttered out trying to look on a brighter side.
"No no no we can't do that! How would the police react if they knew I was on this site or even could get onto this site!" Kevin said harshly.
"Well maybe they wouldn't care because they would be able to catch many criminals and be able to shut the site down. We'd be heroes!"
"I don't really think so." Kevin said. Both went silent until a click was heard from the mouse. Kevin smirked.
"What you looking at now?" Benji leaned in. His eyes got wide with fear and he could feel his heart skip a beat. "Kevin what did you? Did you just? What!"
Kevin laughed "Yes I did! Don't worry it's just a joke! Hey maybe instead of getting the police involved we could catch them ourselves." Kevin said sarcastically.
"WHAT MAKES YOU THINK WE COULD DO THAT!!" Benji jumped out of his chair throwing his arms in the air not catching Kevin's sarcasm.
"Benji I was joking!"
"Well now that you "bought" something from this person you can't just walk away from it! This person could track you down a murder you in your sleep!"
"I suppose you're right." Kevin pushed his chair and spun around in it thinking hard for a plan."Ok so here's the plan. We meet this dude after school I beat him up or something and then we tell the police we found them with dugs on them and they get locked behind bars and we are considered brave heroes or whatever for taking down a drug dealer."
"I. Just. Keviiin that's a horrible idea" Benji wiped his hands on his face trying to conceal his anger. "Good god. What if my parents find out! What if we get hurt? You never know what this person is capable of! Kevin you have honestly lost your mind!"
"Benji do you have better idea?"
"No I don't" Benji said looking to the floor and Kevin smirked.
"Don't worry it'll be fine you can just be my backup. We can just act like we saw the guy and fought him then the cops show up and everything will be fine!"
"What about the finer details."
"What?"
"The finer details. How did we find them? How did a fight start? You know this person will be telling a different story than us so we can't just stroll in expecting them to be on board with our plan. Heck why am I on board with this plan?" Benji was rambling at this point. He was terrified out of his mind!
"Benji, Benji, Benji don't worry we got this I got this. Like you said I can't back out of this you don't know what this guy can do if I don't show up. And I need you there to help me out. Ok?" Benji just slowly shook his head. What was he agreeing to?
"Good!" Kevin exited out of the site and closed his computer. "Well I'll see you tomorrow after school again be ready to be a hero!"
"Y-yep!" Benji got out of Kevin's house as fast he could. What was his friend thinking? This is a mess.
Both boys sat in their beds all night worrying about the events of tomorrow. Kevin wouldn't admit it but he didn't know what he was thinking. This wasn't a prank. He was getting himself into some deep stuff. He rolled over in his bed continuing to think. Tomorrow he will just have to be sure he's ready to pull out some good acting skills.
