Chapter One - Part One

11-19-20XX, 6:05 PM

The young girl ran out of the house, shouts following her.

"Samuel! Get your ass back in here!" The man who dared to call himself her father stormed out after her.

"Go away!" Tears were streaming down her face. "I don't care, just leave me alone!"

Unfortunately, the man caught up to her. He grabbed the girl's hair roughly, yanking hard. He pulled her to his face. "You wanna say that to my face, Samuel?"

The girl quickly shook her head; she knew when she had pushed her limits. This was one of those times.

The man growled and dragged her back inside the rather small house. He threw her down on the hard concrete flooring of the living room.

"You worthless waste of space!" The man slapped her in the face, pushing her limp body away. "Why do you keep disobeying me? Do you want me to keep hitting you?"

The child said nothing, for fear of a bad reaction. Her father was a horrible man, and he'd take anything she'd say out of proportion.

"Answer me, you piece of shit!" He kicked her in the ribs.

Just then, the door slammed open and two voices called, "Dad, we're home!"

The man turned from the quivering girl on the floor to look at his boys. "Joshua, Jackson, welcome home. How was your aunt's place?"

"Boring as always," Joshua sighed.

"Well, I thought it was a lot of fun!" Jackson pouted.

"I'm glad you had fun," their dad laughed. "Samuel, you could learn a thing or two from them."

The girl, Samuel, stood and nodded while holding back her tears "Yes, Father."

"Good girl," her father said, smile dropping. "Now, go to your room, and no dinner."

Her eyes were covered by her bangs as she muttered an affirmation. She silently walked up the stairs and entered the closet she called a room. Maybe she'd get some sleep?

12-08-20XX, 1:27 AM

Sam jolted awake, breathing hard. Her entire form was trembling. Her life was hellish, but her dreams were worse than that. Her dreams make her life seem like paradise.

Still shaken from her dream, the girl stood from her bed. She crept out of the closet and down the stairs, wincing at every creak. She kept looking over her shoulder to see if anyone woke up. She made it to the kitchen without much event.

She climbed onto the counter and got a cup out of the cabinet, then crawled over to the sink and filled the cup with water.

Next, she hunted down the bread, peanut butter and jelly to make a couple sandwiches. Just as she was finishing making the sandwiches, a door opened. In her panic to not get caught, she knocked her glass of water on the floor, shattering the cup and getting water everywhere. She ended up cutting her foot on the way under the table.

"Sammy?" A female voice sounded as the kitchen lights turned on.

"M-Mommy?" The girl hesitantly came out from under the table, hiding her hurt foot. Samuel's mother's eyes widened slightly at the blood on the floor and rushed over in an instant. She pulled her daughter out from under the table.

"Oh, Sammy," she crooned. "How did you get hurt? Was it your father again?"

"I just fell down the stairs." Her stomach twisted into knots.

Her mother gave her an unconvinced look, but didn't press it. "I'll clean up the mess. You eat your sandwiches while I get you some more water."

"Thank you, Mommy."

12-27-20XX, 3:07 AM

This was the day. The morning of her birthday was the day she was going to run away from this hell. Samuel walked to the kitchen quietly, ready to bolt out the door at a moment's notice.

She grabbed a few bottles full of water and a loaf of bread. She put it in the backpack her oldest brother gave her for school a few months before.

"Happy Birthday, me," she muttered, opening the door. She gave the dark innards of the house. This was her only chance to turn back. Did she really want to do this? Yes, yes she did.

She stepped out in the cold, shivering because of her thin clothing. This is what she wanted. No turning back now.
