"I'll protect you, [Y/N]." Ruby promises you gently, holding your hand. You smile at the warmth of her hand. Rubies are known for their use of fire, opposite a sapphire or a lapis. It's quite interesting, you think with a chuckle.

You especially love how when Ruby gets embarrassed, she literally burns up. When you're cold during a long winter's night, she curls up with you to keep you warm. Even if blankets could do that just as well.

She's so defensive of you, too. It's really cute. She overthinks everything involving you. She cares for you so much; she's like a warm, snuggly, loving and warm teddy bear you could hug forever and never let go.

But as the summer days become hazy and lonely, you worry for her own safety. Sapphire is as aloof and distant as ever and you begin to wonder what she's thinking about. Ruby always shrugs off your worries; Rubies were built for fighting and guarding. 

You know that, and yet, you worry. But watching her fight on your behalf makes you smile. Not that you want her to fight for you, it's the energy she puts into it.

"When you live for someone, you're prepared to die." Pearl had once told you. You keep forgetting when she had brought that up or what you had asked, but those words really hit something in you.

Perhaps she sees it as you live for Ruby. Or maybe it's the other way around. You're not sure, and neither is Ruby.

But you two will keep protecting each other until the end.

That's something you both know.
