The ashes

I put my hand out on the wall in front of me. I was in the shower, August Twelfth Two thousand seventeen. In a few hours, we were to scatter my cousins ashes. He was like a brother to me. My sister and I always saw him as our brother.

There is someone else in that equation though... Liz. They used to be like brother and sister, her and Luke, but their feelings grew far stronger than either ever imagined they would. Sometimes, I think they loved each other more than anyone else in the world.... Yet, they were only fourteen....

I stepped out of the shower, wrapped my towel round my waist and looked into
The mirror. I combed my hair for the first time in weeks. I heard the bathroom door open. I turned around to see my gorgeous boyfriend walk into the bathroom.

For the first time in days I smiled. He looked so handsome. Sam wore a black waist coat on top of a dark grey shirt. His trousers were black and his shoes looked newly polished. His dreads must've been taken out the night before, his black hair was braided to the back of his crown, then tied in a small ponytail which had been straightened. Liz's work no doubt. Laine refuses to go near Sam's hair.

He walked over to me and wrapped his arms around my waist and leaned his head down so it was rested on my shoulder. "You ok Babe?" He whispered. I sighed. I leaned back into his embrace. "I guess... I can't help but worry more about Liz than anything... She was fine the first week but now, she's just not Liz anymore..." I murmured. Sam kissed my cheek and straightened himself. He put his hands on my shoulders and kissed my head. "She'll be ok... She has to be." He left and closed the door behind him.

I walked down the stairs, I was wearing my black tuxedo with the navy blue shirt, and my black sneakers. I heard arguing so hurried down. I walked out onto the front porch to see Bryce and Liz yelling at each other. They were still in their pjs, not ready yet.

"For the last time Bryce! It's not appropriate for the event and you are not replacing him!" Liz shouted at Bryce, her dark green eyes tearing up.

"An-"

"Don't you dare call me that!"

"Fine- Liz - it was his favourite song and we're singing it with it without you. I am replacing him and-" he stopped, realising his mistake.

Liz looked up at him, and I saw a tear role down her cheek.

"Liz I'm so sor-"

Liz pushed him so hard he tripped and almost fell on his back side.

"You will NEVER replace Luka. NO ONE will. Today is about him Bryce, not your giant ego!" She stormed off inside, shoving past me.

I sighed and walked over to Bryce. He looked at me and sighed. "Don't you start too." He groaned.

"Look. I know we don't always get on but today isn't about you. It's not about me. It's not about her. It's about Luke. You are NOT taking his place in that song. It would shatter her heart even more!" I shouted. "If it's even possible..." I said under my breath.

"Look man I'm just thinking of hi-"

"Well think harder. She's been stressing for so long about this song and you certainly aren't helping." I hissed.

I turned and went back inside. I slammed the door shut behind me. I walked up stairs to the girls room. I knocked.

"Come in." Liz Sally and Laine called.
