"Don't tell me if you are finding it hard" He offered.
Why didn't he have this same sense before, while he was killing me to speak?
I gave him an icy glare, "Shut up and listen now."
He shrugged, "Okay"
"They didn't want me to be with Michael. They thought he was bad for me. I did not know why they were being so hostile and rude to him. I said I didn't want to be with them if they didn't want to accept Michael. That was my last day with my adopted parents and I got married to Michael"
I sighed, "Things were going great for the first four months but then...I felt like something was different. We were busy with studies. I was in my senior year and he got accepted into California State University. I thought it was the study pressure that kept us apart. He always had assignments or some sort of combined studies...I was alone most of the time"
"Where did you both stay?"
"One of his friends was stinking rich. He lent us an apartment he owned."
Sean nodded, "Was this in Seattle?"
I shook my head, "It was in California"
"Okay"
I did not say anything for a while. I was building up the courage to continue. This is the part where the actual thing comes out and I wanted to be strong enough to narrate it. Sean didn't push me either. He waited for me to speak at my own pace.
I sighed and continued, "One day I found out he was cheating on me. No one in his friends circle knew he was my husband. He told them..." I gulped, "He told them I liked bragging to people that he is my husband but we are only cousins. We lived together since we both have to go to the same college and our parents put us together for security purposes."
Sean cursed and I nodded at him.
"Didn't you show your friends the marriage certificate or something?" He asked.
"He had the certificate. I didn't"
"You were not 18 when you got married to him! Who allowed the union without parental consent and court orders?"
I sobbed, "I don't know..we went to this very small church and he said he'll..he..he'll take care of..ev...everything"
He was by my side in an instant.
"hey..hey..I didn't mean to make you cry"
"No. I am strong. I am not crying" I pulled him closer to me and rested my head on his chest.
"You are crying, Sasha"
"The next time you point that out, I'm blowing my nose using your shirt." I threatened.
He chuckled, "Okay."
So I continued, "I didn't believe when people told me that he was dating another girl. But then I saw them together one day and confronted him about it. He didn't deny it. He told me it was a one time thing and he belongs to me. I did not find the logic in the statement. How can he be mine when he is shagging some random girls, Sean? When I asked him that...he...he...started to beat me" I cried harder.
Sean rubbed my shoulders and pulled me into his lap. I laced my hands around his neck and buried my face in the dip of his shoulder.
"I called my father. I told him he was hitting me and...and he refused to help. He said they shouldn't have adopted me in the first place and want nothing to do with me anymore. They abandoned me when I needed them. I couldn't get out of the house. He wouldn't let me. I only had him and I didn't want to lose him in fear of being alone and stranded. I didn't want to die an orphan, Sean."
