The park almost looked like an unfinished painting—blank whiteness swallowed the once lush greenery. Forlorn trees loomed over the labyrinth of paths.
Alone and shivering, a young woman laid sideways on a nearby wooden bench; her limbs curled into a ball and breathing slow. Revitalizing cold frost kissed her flushed cheeks. Huffs of warm air from her parted lips clashed with the bitter cold—producing small mists.
From a distance, she would've seemed like a poor homeless soul. Her clothes weren't in the best condition and her hair was tangled. Pearly specks were messily scattered throughout her raven colored hair, along with her grey winter coat.
Her melancholic brown eyes watched as the flakes slowly fell around her. She held back the tears contained in them, afraid they'd freeze as soon as they rolled down her face.
"Belle."
The voice she knew all too well caused her to turn her head and utter a gasp from her quivering lips.
Stood before her was a brunet with piercing blue eyes and soft flush on his cheeks, but that wasn't the most breathtaking part of him.
Behind his lean frame, white feathery wings were spread out; blocking out almost everything in the girl's field of vision. An ethereal glow radiated off of them.
"I'm sorry I can't do anything."
His voice was quiet as he reached out a hand to her face. Belle felt her throat tighten with warmth again and she no longer felt the harsh cold; as soon as the first tear slipped out, the others followed in an unbroken stream. Her sobs were choked up and the angel merely stared at her with sorrow.
"Jonathan, you can't just leave."
His wings closed behind him, the light whoosh disappearing into the wind. Jonathan bent down to eye level with her and he stroked her hair.
"You know how it works, Belle. God sent me down for one reason, and one reason only. Guardian angels are for protection."
Belle was silent. Her breathing was somewhat regulated now but her heart clenched at the thought of losing him; the dried up tears reddening her cheeks even more.
"10 years. My bond with you is up to due," he whispered gently, "I'm going back to Eden at midnight."
He wrapped his long arms around her protectively, as he had done many times before, and inhaled her scent for the last time.
She smelled of pine and lavender, and Jonathan immediately connected the floral with her favorite shampoo.
"How much more time?" Her voice was croaky and he felt a pang in his heart at her tone.
"Only a few more minutes."
Her beautiful hickory colored eyes finally met his, sadness evidently swam in the warm pools of chocolate.
"I'll miss you, Jonathan. Thank you for keeping me safe all these years." Belle buried her head into his shoulder and he laid his head on hers.
"I don't want to leave either," he muttered as hundreds of memories rushed to his head.
Considering the amount of times he had done this before, it should've been easy by now; but it wasn't. Parting ways with his assigned person was always painfully difficult as they had gone through a decade together—the memories they shared would be encrypted in their brains forever.
"What was your favorite one?" She looked up at him with confusion and he reworded his question.
"Memory." Belle laid her head on his chest thoughtfully and pondered about it for a few seconds before speaking.
"My parents were never home when I was younger, remember?" Jonathan nodded and hummed for her to continue.
"You'd pick me up from school every day and bring me a piece of candy," she laughed softly at the fond memory, "All the kids would tease me for having an imaginary friend."
There was a few moments of silence, and only the wind howling in the distance was heard.
"Fuck, I didn't realize how much I'd actually miss you," the blue-eyed boy finally admitted and she opened her mouth to speak. Their sentimental moment was interrupted by a sight only visible to their eyes.
A bright light flashed in the darkness above, signaling his departure. The brunette let out a quiet whimper as she tightened her grip on him, almost begging him to stay. Jonathan smiled sadly at her and his wings fluttered open once again.
"Be good, okay?"
Belle didn't have the strength in her to nod and simply nuzzled her head into his shirt. His body warmth radiated off onto her and kept her safe in the cold winter night.
She finally broke apart their embrace and flashed him a small smile, one with the same emotion his had held. He kissed her forehead and cupped her cold hands in his, warming them up.
"I love you."
Whether he had meant it platonically or romantically was unknown. Before either of them could say anything else, an intensely brilliant flash erupted between them—blinding her momentarily. When her vision finally returned, her face fell.
The only sign of his existence was a mark in the snow left in the boy's place. The comforting warmth she had felt before was completely gone, leaving her in the bitter cold once again.
Belle's small hands shook as she attempted to wipe away the tears along her face but to no avail.
Glancing at where Jonathan once stood with her tear-filled eyes, she could just barely make out the outline of a single, frail feather.
