Chapter 3

"Naalala mo din ba yung bumahing ka sa kadate mo with matching rice bits? Ayon, turn off agad. "

"Nakakamiss."

"Asa ka, hindi na kita irereto pinapahiya mo lang ako."

"Di ko type mga pinapakilala mo eh, puro mga socialite."

"Kung anu-ano pang kalokohan sa mga susunod na nireto ko ang ginawa mo. Ano ba talagang type mo?"

"Gusto ko ng responsible, mabait, mayaman, gwapo, tsaka mature mag-isip.", sabi ko.

"Napaka general naman niyan."

"Ah basta, hindi ko ibababa standards ko para lang magka lovelife. Tsaka I'm too young to think about things like that. Besides, college will be so much fun! 'Wag mo ako itulad sa'yo, High school pa lang ang dami nang ex. "

"Wow, bakit may halong judgement?!"

"Joke! Oo nga pala, malapit na death aniv ng parents mo ah, kailan ka pupunta?"

"Di ko pa sure eh, pero siguro one week ako pupuntang Pangasinan para puntahan din sila Lola." 

"Bibisita ba kayo sa puntod ni mama mo bago yung kasal?"

"Oo siguro pero hindi ko alam eh. Sana di mataon na wala ka.", sabi ko. Tumango siya. "Wow, time flies so fast, siguro masaya na si mommy na nakikitang masaya si Daddy kay Tita Cynthia noh?"

"Good thing is walang pagpupumilit na tanggapin mo siya. Buti na nga lang hindi ka matapobreng step daughter eh.", nagtawanan kami.

"May gagawin ka ba sa weekend? Tara labas?"

"May rehearsals kami sa weekend bebe, dinner lang ako pwede."

"Sige, go."

My life is not really that complicated. I will take up BS Nursing when I enter college. I love serving people and I love comforting them. Excited na akong magpasukan.

Malaya University, one of the most liberal schools here in the Philippines. It's both exciting and nerve wrecking because I know there's gonna be a lot of challenges there.

"Huy, alam mo ba marami ring organizations sa Malaya bebe.", sabi ni Ellaine. "Meron ding fraternities, sororities and "gangs"."

"Gangs? Ano 'yon nambubugbog sila? Mga kriminal ganon?"

"Tanga hinde. Apparently, para siyang fraternities and sororities but frats and soros have this set of by laws and hierarchies between them but these so called gangs are much more, uhm, how will I say this, loose?"

"Loose?"

"Yeah, may mga categories eh parang mga students orgs eto yung usual interest orgs including political orgs. Another category belongs to the frats, sororities and confraternities. While the other category is for the gangs."

"What do they do exactly? Negative connotation kasi ang gang eh, parang 'yung mga nang-aabang sa kalye tapos mambubugbog."

"Exactly, same sentiments. According dito sa mga nabasa kong articles. Ang mga so called "gangs" sa Malaya University ay yung mga nagp-provide ng official services. They are funded by outside organizations or personalities. Look eto 'yung mga list ng mga recognized Student Gangs. Mapagpalayang pluma, Paintbrush, Wild Slayers, Life Savers at InkLink. These were established to remove the negative connotation for the word "gangs", since gangs are literally just a group of people.

"Ah, maayos naman pala ang mga pangalan, parang nagegets ko. Sige. lubos lubusin mo na ang orientation. What about them?"

"Apparently, these gangs are composed of 90% elites, may binabayaran kasing fee every semester at hindi lang ito basta barya. The "gangs", like the other categories hold for-a-cause events or donates stuff to people in need. Ang malaking difference nila, para silang naka OJT sa buong duration ng membership nila. For example, ang mga members ng Mapagpalayang Pluma are Communication or Journalism students and the likes. They are asked to participate in special stories by famous broadcasting networks in the Philippines. Kaya pag naka-graduate na sila, 95% may jobs na sila. Si Paintbrush naman mga visual artists, paintings, drawings or any visual arts. Nagpaparticipate naman sila sa mga art exhibits, planning ng mga events sa city etcetera. And ganoon din sa iba pang mga gangs."

"Ano naman 'yong Wild Slayers? Basketball Team?"

"No, actually medyo parang dark and sketchy 'to eh. Members here are physically trained for battle. Mostly mga criminology students or mga may interest mag sundalo. But compared to the other organizations, mas open to sa variety of members. Kahit BS Nursing ka kung gusto mong sumali pwede."

"Ano bang ginagawa nila?"

"They train themselves physically through martial arts and combat sports. They help when there are important or VIP persons visiting the school, mga ushers. They're also hired to do manpower work. That's why variety of skills are welcomed here. Mostly, physical services ang offered nila. Creepy. Sabi sa mga forums eh may underground activities din sila, I'm not really sure what they mean but it sounds criminal."

"Wow, I didn't think that those kinds of organizations exist. Bakit hindi nalang organization?"

"I think dahil sa qualifications ng student orgs sa school na 'to? Mas maluwag kasi ang rules ng mga student orgs eh. Medyo mas complicated kapag gang lalo na sa mga activities at mga fees. Pero pagtatawanan ka nila kapag tinawag mong "gangsters" 'yung mga gang members. You call them depending on what gang they belong. Si Mapagpalayang Pluma, "Manunulat" ang tawag, ang Life Savers, well life savers pa din, ang Paintbrush "Kulay", ang Wild Slayers, depende sa rank and experience basta laging may slayer sa dulo at ang InkLink naman, "Inks".

"Wow, college is something. And I'm gonna say, for a person who hates research, you did a great job there."

"Thanks. Yeah like, gang members introduce themselves like, Hi, I'm Ellaine, Manunulat. And everyone in their school know what that means."

"Awesome."

"True! Magbasa ka ng mga articles. It's so amazing and exciting!"

Excited na akong ma experience ang college life!
