My twin sister, Milly and I were born into what was known as the new world. Birth was known as a new beginning and so the vampires saw this as their new beginning with the humans. Normal vampires couldn't have children, but half-bloods could, our father, Ronan, leader of the vampires was a full vampire and our mother was a half-blood. Only a handful of half-bloods existed in the world, they were rare, they were born when a human and a vampire mated back when humans believed that our species didn't exist, the half-blood would always be taken from their human parents because they would realise that something wasn't right about their new baby. Half-bloods were different from vampires and humans, they had very light blue eyes and stopped aging when they reached 21, they could eat normal human food but preferred their meat raw and so they were taken to live with our colony. Vampires could only feed on blood, human food was like poison to full vampires and would make them sick for days, sometimes weeks. Being born of a full vamp and a half-blood meant that Milly and I had inherited mostly our mother's traits, however, like my father and all other vampires we couldn't tolerate human food.

Growing up our parents would tell us of the new treaty they had pledged with the humans and how it was because of our birth that they were able to have this new beginning.

'Before you two were born humans had no idea of our existence, they had theories, yes, but they never had the proof until the Rogues came along. Rogue's not only wanted human blood , they wanted them slaughtered because they saw the human's as weak and wanted to put them in their rightful place. Your father decided that enough was enough and gathered all the Rogues together for an execution warning other vampires that if they disobeyed our laws the same would happen to them.'

We each listened with fascination as our mother told the story of the Rogues, neither one of us had ever met a Rogue, they died out years ago, but there is always a chance that a vampire can go bad and so every year every vampire has to complete a test, in the test a vampire is shown a film containing bleeding humans, they watch the whole film and once it is over they are asked a series of yes or no questions, if anyone fails they are automatically put into a rehab centre outside of their village where no human will usually enter until the vampire is ready to take the test again. It keeps the humans and the vamps safe from further blood shed.

'When we found out we were pregnant with the two of you-' She paused looking at us individually. '-Our whole colony was overjoyed and so was the day when your father came up with the plan of our new beginning, it would be different to how the Rogues had handled things, things would be done properly, there would be laws and punishments for humans as well as vampires, all thanks to you two.'

She smiled as she looked at us, her special little girls who brought peace for the two species. Before leaving us to sleep she looked at us and sang us our special song.

'Goodnight Milly, Goodnight Cheska, Our special girls you'll always be, You helped all of us see that we can live together in harmony.'

Cheesy, I know, but that song has been sung to us since we were born, it always made me feel special and loved.

Despite what humans have been told over the years, vampires are not so different. The Rogues had led humans to believe that garlic, wooden stakes, crosses, etc would harm us should they ever come across a vamp, the truth was, we had very little weaknesses and it was difficult for a human to tell the difference between a vamp and one of their own with the exception of half-bloods. Once the treaty had been signed and set in motion the human leader, Socrates, wanted to know our weaknesses in the event that one of us turned Rogue, we also knew all of the human's weaknesses and so it was only fair to return the favour. We could be burned by holy water and beheading was the only sure way to make sure a vamp stayed dead, wooden bullets and weapons didn't affect us but normal bullets did, however, once shot in the head or any other main body parts a vamp would only lie dormant, sometimes for months, sometimes years but it was not dead.

Growing up outside of the human village, Milly and I didn't interact with any humans until we were 14 and had to attend a mainstream school, until then my mother hired tutors so we could learn about our history and species, upon turning 14 vampires were required to attend mainstream school with humans so as to get normal jobs just as humans had to. On the first day of year 8 at school, I was so nervous that I had to have 3 blood bags before leaving the house, I tend to eat when I'm nervous.... Milly on the other hand was the more confident out of us both, she knew she was a superior species and often talked of using her strength on any human who gave us any trouble, not that that happened, human children were severely punished if they provoked vamp children, they learned from a young age that we were stronger and so were scare mongered into not giving any vamps any trouble.

Arriving at the school gates on that first day was terrifying, but having Milly by my side I felt that I could take on the world, we had always been best friends and always had each other's backs. Milly was very different to me, even though we were twins we didn't look alike and had very different personalities. Milly was confident, boisterous and was always looking for trouble, she was also obsessed with the Rogues but that was our little secret. I, on the other hand was shy, plain and generally anxious about anything new, our only similarity was our parents.

On the first day at our new school we were instantly separated into different classes, before beginning school we each took various tests to decide which classes we would be in, I was in a class full of 17 year olds, some were my age but not many, we were the advanced class. Milly's class was the average class, she was with other children her own age and academically was at the right level for her age. Looking around even I couldn't tell the vamps and humans apart but they certainly noticed me, coming from a half-blood parent I had light blue eyes, the only sign that I wasn't a normal vamp, no one else in my class was a half-blood, this made me feel very alone and more anxious than normal, all I thought about that morning was Milly and how I couldn't wait to see her. At lunch time, as I was looking for Milly and deciding what to have a girl and boy came up to me, at first I thought they were maybe going to talk to the girl in front of me but then they started talking to me.

'I'm Toby, this is Mel, we're twins too. We're humans though, we've met lots of vamps but never a half-blood.'

Before I had time to reply, Mel spoke.

'We've seen your sister, she looks nothing like you, do you both have the same parent?'

At this point I saw toby kick her, I didn't mind the curiosity, I was happy at just having a conversation with someone other than Milly, it meant I was making friends.

'Actually we have the same parents but we're not identical, my mother is a half-blood so I got her features, Milly looks like my dad.'

And so began our little friendship, around the school after that first day we became known as the three musketeers.
