[Rhett]
That was going to be the day.
I felt as if I was a nervous teenager, finally confessing a long-lasting crush that he has had since the third grade. I felt stupid for getting worked up about it, but I really couldn't help it. I tended to get worked up over everything, so what I was planning to do seemed unlikely coming from a person like me. I didn't even know how well it would go; I was almost certain that he would laugh. Not to hurt my feelings, but he probably would just think that it was some sort of joke. I was more nervous than I had ever been in my entire life.
I buttoned up my light blue and green plaid shirt, adjusting it ever so carefully, to make it so that every part of my shirt was perfection. I smoothed out my black dress pants, and squirted cologne where I saw fit. I most likely overdid it, but I needed to make sure that I smelt like a sophisticated man, rather than a piece of trash that had been in the garbage for weeks. I patted down the stray blonde hairs that stuck out on my head, and made sure that everything appeared to be stellar.
Knowing that Neo would appear at my doorstep at any given minute, I frantically gargled a large mouthful of mouthwash, accidentally swallowing it and gagging as a result. I quickly washed my face, and dried it off in a panic. All of a sudden, I heard the doorbell, which sent butterflies into my stomach.
I abruptly ran to the door, eager yet nervous to see him, knowing what I was going to do. I took a few large breaths, and swung the door open, a bit too hard by mistake. I immediately gazed into his hypnotic, sky-blue eyes and smiled. He wore the same, torn-up leather jacket he always wore, his shiny black hair scattered in the most perfect way. He gave a lazy smirk in return to my smile, and soon broke the silence.
"So... you called?" He asked, unaware of the reason why I wanted to go to our regular hangout in such short notice. "You acted weird on the phone. Like, more weird than you usually act." He brought to my attention. I gulped, but attempted to play it of like it was nothing.
"Oh, well... you know me. I'm always nervous about something." I chuckled.
"True." He agreed. He observed my outfit, and laughed a bit. "Do you ever not wear something fancy, Rhett?"
"Oh come on! You need to look good so you're... approachable."
"Approachable?"
"Yeah. Approachable."
"Well it seems like it's working out wonderfully for you so far." He remarked sarcastically, aware of the fact that I hardly have anyone that even acknowledges me whenever we go out, while he has ladies under both of his arms with ease.
"Shall we get going?" He asked, motioning towards his shiny, red corvette.
"Oh. Right. Of course." I nodded, walking swiftly to his car. I plopped myself into the passenger seat, and buckled up, while he didn't even bother to put his on. He briskly sped away, despite the fact that he knew we were only a couple of minutes away from our destination.
Sometimes, I wondered how we even became friends. We were as different as night and day; I was a nervous, scatterbrained nerd who made sure he was always at the top of his class and played by all the rules, while he was the typical bad boy who did everything in his power to break them. I cared what people thought about me, and tried my best to make sure I appeared to be perfect and pure, while Neo didn't care what people thought of him and partied all the time. I was a full-out introvert that hardly had the gumption to talk to anyone, while he appeared to know just about anyone in town.
Yet, despite how different we were, we have been best friends ever since we met.
"Hey, you did great in your play last week." He stated, as he sped up a bit dangerously.
"Wait wait wait, you were there?!" I was shocked; I had never told him about it, nor did I expect him to show up.
"Well, when you said you were going to be busy for a few nights, I knew something was up. So I talked to Atticus and Stephanie, because I knew they'd know what you were up to. I did some prying, and sure enough, I found out you were performing down at the Imagine Theater, so I snuck in to watch ya."
